well, he did only play 1 of those 3 years. still, at $1.5 million, i'd rather have hasek than belfour at $4.5 million if we're on the subject of 40 year old goalies. a reliable backup would be a nice insurance pickup, but i don't think there's too much out there. bring on opening night! :thumb:

Yeah I agree, there is a big question mark hanging over his head right now, well have to wait and see if he proves us wrong. I think Ottawa should invest in a solid backup goalie imo. Good job with the trade though, Id make that deal in a hearbeat, Hossa is great but Heatley is a better fit and is younger to boot. Im always glad when the best players come to Canada or teams in the Northeast, that way we get to see them play alot more. Thats why Im glad Crosby went to Pitts instead of Anaheim.
Hey, I never said Belfour was a better option. But I think it is pretty dangerous to put the fortunes of a team as talented as the Sens in the hands of a headcase like Hasek.
On another note, apparently Heatley asked for the trade. That changes my opinion of him a lot. The Thrashers stuck by that guy after everything that happened, yet he asks for a change of scenery. Wow.

If it was for one year right now Id take Hasek over Belfour, I think they both are past due anyways, one has a bad groin the other has a bad back and they are both old. I cant believe before the lockout that the Leafs were going to give him $8mil a year for 2 years? Jeez take the money and get someone young and solid in there instead, when Belfour finally packs it in, I hope for you (leaf fans) they have enough cap-room for someone solid. I think this will be the new catch phrase in hockey now- "cap-room". Im surprised he asked for the trade, maybe he got home-sick?

with de vries as the d-man involved, this looks even better for the sens. at $2.28 million he was earning a little too much in the post-lockout NHL. that money will come in handy when redden has to resign. well done mr. muckler! :thumb:

It's actually a common enough thing in the NBA, and it wouldn't surprise me if in the future there are more "sign-and-trade" deals done in the NHL in the future.
But I doubt there will be any as big as this. This is a total blockbuster.
I don't like to admit that the Ottawa Senators do well in ANYTHING... but I think they win this trade. I'd rather have Heatley than Hossa. Heatley has shown in the past with some of his international play that he can come through in the clutch, whereas Hossa has repeatedly choked like a dog in the playoffs (usually against the Leafs, of course, ha ha! :lol: ). de Vries is a serviceable d-man, but not much more than that.
And cfern... usually I agree with you, but not this time. I think you're being a little hard on Heatley. I think he realized he could never really move on with his life or become a better player in Atlanta because of everything that happened off the ice there. I don't begrudge him for asking for a trade... if anything I have more respect for Don Waddell and the Thrasher organization for doing this, because they were under no obligation to do anything more for Heatley.
Just wait til Hasek up and quits on your team, just when you need him most. Then see how happy you are with him. Belfour's a headcase too, but he's no quitter.
