I thought it would be a cool idea to share stories about when we became Hip fans. How did you become "hip"?
Here's Mine,
It was in 1991. My cousin gave me a mix tape. On it was Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Dire Straits, ZZ Top, and The Hip. Wierd combination, I know. I had heard of the Hip, but I had never heard them. I was totally blown away! The Hip stuff was about a million times beter than any other music I had ever heard. The songs on the tape were Blow, New Orleans and Trickle Down.
I immediatley bought their CD's and shortly after bought a guitar and learned all of their songs. I became Obsessed!
Even to this day, nothing comes close to the Hip!
:!: EDIT: There is already a thread like this posted by Beat. I didn't notice. -MattPower:!:
I had always heard them on the radio since the early '90's and I thought they were good, I just wasn't into music as much as I should have been. What started the "turn" was when "So Hard Done By" came out on radio. I was hooked.
Saturday, July 13, 1996 was the icing on the cake for me. Edenfest day 2 ( I think the date is right). We all know how that one went down!
I was blown away. I bought Henhouse and Day for Night right then and there. Since then I listen at least an hour a day!
Cheers!
Chad
Awesome Hipkid. So hard Done By is one of my favorites too.
I'm only a newbie hip fan. I've heard many of there bigger hits before and really like them but it wasn't until my first concert (Sept 21 2002) that I really became obessed. And what was thanks to my brother who was already HIPnotized. Since then I've managed to collect tons of their boots and they are all awesome.

Rob,
"HIPnotized" - I like the term. I'm definatley Hipnotized!

Hey Matt , 20 posts on your first day , that's gotta be a record , you'll pass Lance in 3 weeks.

You've definitely got the Hip bug. P.S. Check out page two of Tragically Hip Discussion , seventh category down.
Oops. Sorry guys. I was blind to not see that Beat already made a topic just like this. I'll be more observant next time.
The day I became a obsessed with the hip. It was when me and my friends and classmates were having our last home coming party in high school. It was right after my football game, which we won!!!

I have listen to the hip many times before that and liked them, but after that night. It felt like I was converted into a religon! I can't imagine myslef listening to any other band and liking them more than the hip. I always tell my friends if I was in a band, I would want it to be just like the hip. I can't really explain it with words. The hip is in my blood. I get a different great feeling everytime I listen to the hip. Gordie's lyrics always give me a different story when I listen to him. Baker's lead guitar absolutly HIPnotizes me! Well I better stop now before I write a book.

Go Hip!!!!
I guess for me it was around '93, I'd just started high school and without any older siblings to introduce me to good music i had to search it out on my own. after watching countless hours of the 'nation's music station' in the days of erica ehm and terry david mulligan and i realized that most commercial music was crap (good thing i found that out early on!!) but one of the videos captured my attention and it turns out that it was 'courage' by the hip and i have to say my curiosity was peaked by the swaying front man who sang with his eyes shut and was wearing a knitted bruins sweater....i went out and picked up the album cause i couldn't get the tune out of my head and the rest they say is history....since then i've told everyone i meet that they're a great band that should be checked out and i've got some shrugs and i've got some converts as well but it doesn't mattter cause they're still great and they're my fav band of all time!

The first time I heard the Hip was at the cottage with my family, I was probably around 12 years old and "New Orleans" was on The Wolf ...anyone from the Bancroft area knows what I'm talking about....From that moment on I was hooked, since that day I have been to 16 concerts, even went to Cleveland to see them, and frequently try to convert non-hip fans. Even had to find me a BF who was a Hip fan, can't have it any other way !
It was the summer of 1991 at the Swatzky's House in Wiarton.
Bigass fire and about 30 close friends with Kenny's Mustang parked about 20 yards away. House speakers proped up in the hatch blaring Road Apples and Up To Here... Beautiful starry night out. Rob's house is the last one on the gravel road and the nearest neighbour is about 1 mile away.. Rob and Kenny "hipnotized" me.
I can understand why the "starry" background is so popular.
Funny thing is, I can't remember...I'm old you know. Wait a minute...
One day in '89 I cut myself, it was a nasty cut. I was running all over the house looking for anything to stop the bleeding. My buddy says, "Here, use this", he gave me the liner notes from the CD "Up to Here". It was all we had, and I didn't care...who was The Hip anyways. So I pressed the liner notes on the open cut, the blood seemed to almost instantly disappear, but at the same time the blue ink from the paper started fading away, kind of leaking off the page, and I noticed it was going right into the open wound. After a few minutes, the liner notes were completely white or blank and my cut was healed without a sign of it ever being there in the first place.
From then on, as you can imagine, I had no choice but to worship what was inside of me...
Mats.
Hey Mats , you should get Scully and Moulder on the case.
I’m from the US and a relatively new Hip fan. The moment I became Hipnotized was on a trip to Toronto in Aug. of 2001 with a few buddies. My friend put in a Hip mix in the car and the first song I heard was Bobcaygeon. I thought the song was great. Then, the second song I heard was Nautical Disaster. I felt chills when I first heard that. The rest is history.
