Hey folks...
As I was listening to TATH the other day in the car, it occured to me that they must be terribly proud of that particular album. It was the first self-produced record, and they recorded it at their very own studio for the first time. Plus, that particular tour, from May 1996 to December 1996, was incredibly energetic and passionate. Listening to the boots from that tour, you can feel the extra bit of energy that they put into playing the "new" songs.
Any other different thoughts and opinions? Which album do you think the band os most proud of, and why?

I would have to say TATH also.
That is the album that seemed they had a difficult time with each other making it.
They have always been a real close group of friends, it has seemed - maybe by that album putting their friendship to the test - it made them stronger people - so maybe even music aside - that album means more to them than what you hear on the surface.
By the way - that is still my favorite album.
I can see them being really proud of Music@Work, only because it probably receives the least praise from critics/fans, etc... It did take off in a different direction, but to diehard fans, I think we saw that direction coming and we can really appreciate it. But from them, we saw Paul's coming out party (in terms of singing ability), some great gems, and then a great tour. Just my $0.02
Good topic. I would love to hear from the band on this one, but we will most certainly get the "our latest stuff is our fav" answer; which is understandable in it's own right. My vote would have to be PP, but it was a close seconf with TTH & IVL...
IVL has such awesome B side quality songs...god that should have broken them BIG...I just don't get it sometimes...
i was thinking day for night, (maybe cuz it's my fave) but henhouse is deft something to be proud of , great tour good vibes they even played escape is at hand... at my show in 96!

Can you explain this at all? I didn't know anything about them having a hard time working together on this album, or it putting a strain on their friendship or anything.
I would think that they should be really proud of TATH since it was their first self produced album and all...but to say that that was their proudest moment I think might overstep the bounds. Obviously no one but the band can say what their proudest moment was and even then there is probably dissention amongst the members. I would think (if i were a member of the hip) that PP or M@W would be my proudest only because they really started to reach out with new styles. IVL is clearly the result of M@W and PP being a move toward this new style. I'd like to think though that their proudest moment was the EP since it was their first release and I love bands that love and respect their roots!
My vote would go to the latest IBE. its such a solid album front to back and after somewhat mellower releases the guys proved they can still rock. being about the same age as the guys in the band you start to wonder if you can still do what you did when you were a young buck in your 20's. with this album they proved they still can rock with the best. just my opinion......i might be wrong.
They are most proud of DAY FOR NIGHT. I have a gut feeling and I have another gut feeling that the next album will replace that for them. It might be our favorite as fans too.
With nary a turd in the punch bowl (how Michael Stipe once described REM's complete opus), I would go way out on a limb and think that they're most proud of the Scared single, with the speeded up SHDB and the slowed down DD.

In terms of whole Albums, this is how I would rank them regarding the original question:
DFN is so damn solid! Nautical, Greasy, Scared, Fire, Inevitability, Grace, So hard done by.....
As is Phantom: Poets, Something, Bob-C, Thompson, Fireworks, Escape, Emperor, Membership.....
As is Fully: Courage, Looking, 100th, Fully, 50, Wheat, Werewithal
I'd have to say one of those three are in the top teer. Just below:

Up to Here
IBE
The others have memorable singles: Darkest One, Dire Wolf, Ahead, Music@WRK, Last American Exit, but those six are heads above the other 4 as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed. I think the band would go with IBE. I mean, with the exception of a slip up or step in the wrong direction, a band has to think that each album is better than their last. If not, they should stop recording, unless they're only in it to make a couple more bucks.
I would rate IBE as one of the top Hip albums. I also think it's cool to think that the Hip are always continuing to grow and getting better... and although that continual growth has led to experimenting in different directions, with IBE, it led them back to a more classic-sounding-Hip album.

Actually, here's some food for thought.... Perhaps they are most proud of UP TO HERE. If it wasn't for UP TO HERE the HIP would not have started HIPMANIA. And personally, I think there's not a single song on there I don't love. I could listen to it start to finish back-to-back repeatidly like it was a greatest hits compilation in and of itself! I think the only thing we can say for sure, is which album they are the least proud of. And I assume it's the first album- seeing as how they never play songs off that album live (Or at least haven't in so many years). Will they someday? When was the last time they played HighwayGir? Smalltown Bringdown?

I disagee with this. Personally, there are certainly things I've done in the past that I am more proud of that the most recent thing I've done. I continue doing my best if I have it in me at the time. The goal is growth, but that doesn't mean we always reach the goal. Sometimes circumstances surrounding an event can make getting through it more rewarding or self fulfilling, even if you feel the final product may not be as good as something where adversity wasn't present. Just my thoughts.
Very interesting topic. I wonder what the correlation is with either critical or commercial success with a band's personal or collective feelings about a project?
