It punishes good owners like Mike Illich, while rewarding assholes like Bill Wirtz who has run the Hawks franchise into the gd ground!

Also, this Bettman should be hung. Stinky dick licker lets in a bunch of new bullshit teams in towns that cannot support them, dilluting the talent of the league, and now the traditional markets like the TO, Detroit, Montreal, have to suffer because Nashville has a god damn team. Those fucking hillbilly's don't know what the f**k hockey is!! And to add insult to injury, Quebec, Winnepeg, don't have teams, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, and Ottawa are hanging by a thread. Now dudes like Forsberg may play in Europe for the next season. This is fucked.

Mick

Huh? The salary cap punishes teams that used to try to fix their mistakes by throwing an insane amount of money at players. Doing so would drive up the market for players, which in turn hurts the small market teams that can't afford to pay players what Detroit, Philly, and the Ranger$ can afford players. The reason Edmonton, Pittsburgh, and Ottawa are "hanging by a thread" is because some owners drove salaries up to levels that were unsustainable in small markets where there are fewer sources of revenue.

Yeah, Bill Wirtz is definitely a greedy prick who needs to die, but in the long run the cap is going to save more franchises than it is going to hurt. You've just been shafted by an asshole owner, something us Leaf fans had to deal with in the 70s and 80s.
Yeah,

That is true that alot of these teams are making it tough to compete, but you have to recognize that many teams should not exist. Here's my list.

Phoenix
Atlanta
Nashville
Carolina
Anaheim
Tampa (regardless of Cup Win)
Florida
Columbus

That would leave 22 teams. Plenty of talent to go around.

I have to say, I do like some of the new game rules. I think it will open up the ice a bit, and provide a more entertaining game.

And just to re-iterate, Bill Wirtz is dick.

Mick
Bill Wirtz is definitely a dick. And that's the nicest thing that can be said about him.

I don't buy the "talent dilution" argument. The talent base has expanded just as rapidly as the league has. Think of it - 30 years years ago 90%+ of players were from Canada. What's that figure now? 65%? The simple fact of the matter is that players today are way better than they used to be (better training, better coaching, better conditioning, etc).

But yeah, there are some cities that shouldn't have a team. I'd take Columbus off your list, but I agree with the rest of 'em.
I actually debated columbus. It looks like they are supported well. Well, keep them, get rid of the rest, but bring back Quebec to keep it equal.

Perhaps you are right about the talent. But I am not 100% sold on the fact that there are enough goalies around for each team to have a solid one. Thoughts?
All you need to do to wonder about the quality of today's goalies - even the worst ones (like Dan Cloutier) is watch a game from the 80s. They were HORRIBLE then. But now, with the bigger pads, the advance scouting on the opposition (to isolate shooter tendancies), and the better positional play I think there are plenty of good to great goalies to go around - at least relative to a generation ago.
Okay,

But what about in the late 80's early 90's when Hasek backed up Belfour? Or when guys like Casey, Hrudey, Moog were back ups?

Moog was average at best (ask Dallas Stars fans), Casey had a couple of good years but was hardly a long-time front-line tender, and Hrudey didn't exactly carry the Kings to any Cups all by himself.

The Hasek example is a good one, but remember - Hasek is/was very unorthodox in his style which made Chicago very nervous about him, whereas Belfour was more by the books, not to mention proven.
I see your point.

Kelly Hurdy never got to the Stanley Cup Finals at all as the L.A. Kings never got to the Stanley Cup Finals at all, because as we all know, Wayne Gretzky high-sticked Doug Gilmour in Game 6 of the Campbell finals, and the Leafs scored on the ensuing power play to go on and play Montreal in the finals...its true, look it up.

Wouldnt that be something, Crosby goes to the pens, they build a team around him build a new arena, and 5-6 years later, he bolts for the Habs.. He'd be public enemy #1 in Pittsburgh after that. I sure hope we get him at some point...but does anyone think there is too much pressure on this kid? Comparing him to Mario and all that talk of him saving the pens and building a rink. Does anyone think he might not be the 100+ point superstar he's made out to be, or is it just a matter of time.. :?

I'm no scout, but when Gretzky says: "He sees the ice the same way I did", it makes you wonder......
