From the looks of this pic, it looks like a serious discussion on what to play for an encore. This is what I love and respect about this band. After 20 years together, its still a group thing on what to play, and they even change things up on the spot. Some would say, after 20 years, can't you get your shit together and know what your playing, but I like the spontaneaity (did I spell that right?) of this band. Nothing is set in stone, nothing is as it seems, you just never know with the Hip....just awesome. I look back at the greatest band in the world, Led Zeppelin, and you see their live shows, as awesome as they were, it was the same set list every night for ever tour, starting from about 1973 to 1980. I wish they would have had this type of "bandmanship" as the Hip. I don't think there is any other band that fits the definition of BAND as much as Zep and Hip when it comes to importance of each member of the band, but the Hip take the cake as the complete and total package for every other aspect of being a band....hope this makes sense
the thing with zep though, is every night the songs would change...you'd hear little bits of elvis pop up in dazed and confused, they'd improvise so much that each night was something different...and they didn't have the same setlist for 7 years straight..they would change from tour to tour...but i do see what you're saying about the hip....

sorry, didn't mean the same set list for 7 years, your right, each tour was different from the next, but each night of the same tour was the same. yeah, the improvisation was great, and no version of songs like Dazed, Stairway and No Quarter were ever the same, but I wish someone like JPJ or Bonham would maybe stand up one night and say, hey, let's play "whatever" tonight for an encore. Now, the Hip don't pull something out of the blue for encores, its usually a collection of songs to choose from, but the fact they may change it up from night to night is cool

I would like to know more about Gord Sinclair's setlist selection 'system'.
I saw an interview somewhere (I&I?) where Gord Downie said GS had a system and that eventually we get to hear (pretty well) everything.
If I'm not mistaken, setlists have become pretty standard lately with one or two oddballs thrown in. I don't mind, they're all great songs.
My God, this band is good.
Yet another reason why I love the Hip. Not only do you not know what songs you're getting, but chances are good that the versions you're getting are jamm-y, and different then what they played the night before.
While I love bands like U2, they usually keep the same set list (with maybe a few different versions) to keep up their "show" with the lights, videos, etc. You know Bono is gonna use his spotlight for Bullet the Blue Sky, you know he's gonna try to be a bull and butt Edge's guitar, only to fal down at the end.....
I prefer spontaniety..... even if they screw up a song. If i only wanted to hear the Hip by Rote at good ole' ARA, I'd stay home and listen to the CDs.
Course, who needs a light show, when you have the Rock Devil himself, Gordie performing nightly exorcisms to cast out the evil of the world and leave us bathed in pure rock and roll light.

Opening and closing with the same song is one of the most self indulgent things I've heard a band do in concert. It is uttery ridiculous and unimaginative and just plain stupid. I like some U2 songs but they need to get over themselves if they play the same song more than once a concert.

cratch: It reminds me of a time I saw The Tea Party, it was on the transmission tour, they played Temptation and as soon the song ended Jeff yells out: "lets do it again!!" and they played it again, I was like what the F! I hate to diss the TP but that was stupid, and so is what U2 did. [imo]

I saw them in New York in May and they opened with something else but Vertigo was the second song, and it was also the final song of the show. Both times they played the whole song - no medly. I was pissed. It's not like they don't have any other songs they could play. I used to love going to U2 shows (up through the Zoo TV tour) but now I could care less. Hip shows and their spontaneity have spoiled me.
