You've probably all heard it, but can anyone confirm it?

For about five years an instrumental version of the original Gordie's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" has been floating around cyberspace credited to the boys. I haven't found anything to confirm this, and was wondering if anybody had any new info? Hip tune? Not a Hip tune?

And can anybody (Rory... I'm looking in your direction Smile ) confirm that The Hip actually produced a cover of "Limelight" and presented it to the members of Rush? Anybody know the year? Anybody know Geddy Lee's e-mail address?
I have a crappy 20 second video of the boys jamming out Limelight...I'd love to see the whole thing!
We know they did a video of Limelight, but if it was sent to Rush or not, how will we really know unless we ask them. Maybe this is a good question to ask a hip band member the next time someone has the opportunity.

As for the Wreck of Edmond Fitzgerald thing, I have absoutely no idea if the song floating around is their's or not. I have a feeling the answer is no.
I think Pearl Jam did that Edmund Fitz jam...
I think its a Rheostatics song.
Its on the album Mellville.
I included the Limelight clip on Hipfans.com Grab Bag Volume I. No idea if they sent it to Rush...

7. Where can I get a copy of Limelight, the Rush tune that The Hip performed on their 1993 tour?
From: Tales from the Hip, Winter 94-95 No.1: "Well, the only full copy was given to our friends in the mighty Rush. So unless you can give them a call and ask to borrow it, it won't be available."
I'm quite sure "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" is a Gordon Lightfoot tune, but i couldn't confirm that for your clip.
i think he's right.
When Rush was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Junos, they played a clip of the Hip jamming on "Limelight" at the Bathouse. I used to have it on VHS, which is probably buried in a box somewhere at my parents' house. As for the "Edmund Fitzgerald" cover, I have no idea. I'd have to hear it. My guess is that it's the Rheostatics. There's a version of it on their live album "Double Live" where half the song is instrumental. Maybe that's it??

Speaking of obscure cover songs, does anybody remember the 54-40 special that aired on Muchmusic in 1992 in honor of the band's 10th anniversary? I specifically remember them showing a clip of the Hip playing a kick-ass cover of "Baby Ran". Wish I could get my hands on that.
I listened to the song(wreck), and i'm stumped. I found this interiew with Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam:

It did say they played an instrumental of the song. I haven't heard the Rheostatics' version, i wouldn't count that out as a possibility. I'm not a Pearl Jam fan, but i do believe it sounds much more like their rendition would rather than the hip's.
I downloaded this song, but I can't hear anything that sounds even remotely close to "Edmund Fitzgerald".

I remember seeing that as well. Oglawaits has that on VHS too. I remember the graphic saying

Baby ran...sort of..

Gorgeous. Thanks for that.

As for Lightfoot's "Edmund," I've e-mailed the website, they said they'll get back to me soon with an answer.

As for the Pearl Jam connection, the person who e-mailed me about the song actually found it listed as a Pearl Jam-Hip instrumental duet.
i have read this thread a few times, and i am still not sure what you are asking.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is DEFINITELY a gordon lightfoot original. not a Hip or pearl jam song.
