I was just wondering whether there are any vegetarians or vegans lurking around on Hipbase. If so, care to share your story? What led you to become one? And what benefits has this lifestyle brought you so far?

I've been thinking about giving up pork, but man its hard to quit being a carnivore....
If god meant us to be vegetarians...he wouldn't have filled animals with so much meat.

Jen and I decided to stop eating all pork products about a year ago. Yeah, it sucks and I still crave ham, chops and especially bacon, but we still eat all other types of meat. It feels good to know that we're not contributing anymore to pig suffering. I believe that pigs suffer MUCH more than other animals in a factory-farming environment, due to their very high intelligence (there is strong evidence to suggest that pigs are at least as smart as dogs). It makes me sick just thinking about the conditions that they live in, but I'm glad that it's no longer because of me. We still eat beef, chicken and fish, so the cravings are easily managable.

That's really good. You may well be right about pigs suffering more in comparison to other animals in factory farms however I watched the 'Meet your Meat' video which is available on the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) website. It shows secret footage made at these factory farms and the images made me sick to my stomach; I don't see how anyone, after having seen that movie, can happily chew on a piece of meat again without thinking about the abuse all factory farm animals experience en route to the slaughterhouse.

Being in the meat business, I can assure you those videos that you are seeing are extreme cases, and that is why they are showing them to you. They are trying to sell you an idea, just as any other salesman trying to sell you magazines, religions, vaccums.
Recently, there was a big uprising about unhuman conditions and mal-treatment of chickens by Kentucky Fried Chicken. Pamela Anderson and a couple of other celebrities were involved. Basically, this was a publicity stunt for her. Speaking about chicken in THEIR farms that live in 1 foot by 1 foot cages, are plucked alive, and so on and so on. That's all B.S. In fact, Kentucky Fried Chicken does not even have chicken farms. They buy it from different suppliers, depending on what supplier is in their area. For instance, the Kentucky chicken in California is not coming from the same Kentucky supplier as Kingston(which is my company by the way), and so on and so on.
I understand I'm talking about chickens now rather than pork or beef(we deal with both as well), but every major processor has govt. officials in their buildings every day to oversee the humane treatment, and proper sanitary procedures.
Had some 1 inch T-bones on the charcoal BBQ this weekend. Medium rare--mmmmm.
I'm sure you're right. I'm sure there are farms where animals aren't (as) maltreated as the ones in the video but that doesn't change things. You can't know from taking a look at the neatly packaged meat in the store whether it's from one of the "decent" farms or not. Plus.. even if it does come from a "decent" farm, what do you think they do with the animals? Cuddle them to death?
who gives a fucking shit, animals dying is part of nature, the least we can do is enjoy their meaty offerings so that at least they aren't going to waste. jesus ate animals....

I am an animal lover. I have a cat, and I treat her as I would a daughter. All I was trying to say is do your homework before you pass judgement.

I wasn't going to post in this thread, but since others who share my view already have...
I have nothing against vegans and vegetarians, except when they try to push their view on food on me and try to make me feel guilty for eating meat. Well sorry, I like eating meat, always have and always will. I can sort of understand vegetarianism to a limited degree (i.e. perceived health reasons)... but the vegan people just weird me out. Sorry, but it's true. What the heck do you people EAT???
Never mind... here' my suggestion. If you don't try to force me to not eat meat, then I won't make fun of your vegetarian/vegan ways, and we'll get along just fine.
