I was just looking in the Hipbase song stats section and something jumped out at me, Born In the Water has only ever been played once, 1990-04-11 in Montreal to be exact, now thats going back a while. I know there was some controversy with the song at that time, Im not familiar with the story maybe someone could shed some light on it perhaps? I can only speculate that may be one of the reasons it never got played again, or maybe it was just forgotten and left behind like so many others (38 Years Old, Highway Girl, Another Midnight and Trickle Down come to mind) Or could it be it just got lost in the mix of all the great early Hip classics ie: NOIS, Blow, Little Bones, Cordelia, Boots or Hearts, Fight and all the rest of the mainstays of Hip setlists at that time. Does anyone know? Im not one to try and decipher lyrics and find deeper meanings to songs like some others (dame)

, I dont have the time nor the patience, I find it a frustrating task to say the least. Some lyrics may be obvious in their meaning but like people have said with Gord Downie you never really know. All that being said, I really like BITW and its my feeling that this song should be resurrected and start being played again as loud and vigorous as it was meant to be played. It is one of the more rocking songs in the Hip catalogue and would sound great live, I usually include it on all my Hip cd-r discs. A forgotten song? Not here.. :thumb:

I love that song. It's one of those fantastic lost gems that would cause me to have a complete EARgasm if it was ever played live.
It seems to be one of those road-house, bluesy numbers from the early days (I'll Believe In You, When The Weight Comes Down, Boots or Hearts) that would fit in really nice opening for the Stones.
I think the band only plays old stuff cause they feel they have too, ("Songs they owe" ya know?) hence the repetition of UTH and RA stuff, with the odd "Boots" and "LTR" tossed in here and there. Can't blame them really, especially when the catalogue is so rich and still growing.
As for 'Born In The Water,' somebody from the Soo e-mailed me and said it's been banned across their radio stations... I couldn't verify it, and it doesn't seem likely...
But I guess folks there don't like being called "smart as trees" and the song does kinda make generalizations; a sweeping condemnation of all in SSM, rather than just one boneheaded mayor and his council.
It's also from Gord's more nationalistic days, he's since
sworn off that, and perhaps swore off the song too. But the G-Man is politically aware, and with seperatism about to retake the national agenda in 2007, who knows what might pop up?
Thanks for the cool insights dame! You truly are the king of kings! (in a Charlton Heston voice)
Id flip out too if I heard this song live, wolf. If they ever do those "evening with" shows again it should be there. Maybe with the new album and forthcoming tour (ARA?) they might mix it up a little more and dip into the past and pull out some rareties. Here's hoping! :thumb:

Those 'song stats' are by no means complete...
I am going to doubt that the band doesn't play this song for any particular reason, or any other song for any reason. They have a huge catalogue, and at any given time probably couldn't whip out every single one of their songs. People learn and forget music. If they haven't played it in a while they probably just haven't thought about it, and don't care to bring it back.

Your probably right, but if the song stats are true and it has only been played once, it does raise some questions I think. Can anyone confirm if this song has been played more than once? Either way I just thought Id bring it up, I really dig that tune and was wondering if anyone else wanted to hear it make a comeback.

Seems odd that it didn't get a few outings during the "Evening With" gigs... and we're STILL wondering (*hint hint HDRC guys*

) what old stuff and covers the boys played at that private birthday party gig last year.
Id pay for that info dame  It never made the "evening with" shows and I couldn't find it anywhere else, now I only own around 30-40 boots and it's not on any of them. Im hoping someone can prove that its been played more than once. Dame I think you should investigate this cold case see what you can uncover.
