Yeah - I guess you could say I made the transition from hip fan to rabid hip worshiper that night.

Dude, we were at that concert! Granted we were a bit older than you were, but that was when we truly became Hip fans. That was the first Hip show that my husband and I saw. I remember being blown away when I heard "100th Meridian," which they played so much faster and harder than on Fully Completely (the first Hip album that I owned). The true measure of a band's talent is how they perform live. My husband and I have seen the Hip over a dozen times since then (all over the country), and we have never been disappointed!

What camp?
Hey 131NC - Mrs. Buda.
Tell your husband to drop me a line - I have not spoken to him in about a year.

Well, I guess I don't have to feel ancient. First time was a bootleg on a friend's walkman, just before class, 1985 or 1986.

I thought they were okay at the time, but nothing special.
For me it was in high school, one of my friends was listening to some Hip on his discman. The bell rang for period change and he(in his usual idiocy) left his player. I grabbed it to return it to him later, but found myself listening to it within the hour. One thing led to another, now Hip comprises two thirds of my music collection.
i remember buying a FC tape for my parents as part of a christmas gift thinking it was "their" type of music....by the end of the following summer, that tape was rendered useless due to the constant playing on the tape deck in MY old impala....this episode remains my absolute best misjudgement of ones musical tastes
Early 1990, sitting around at my buddy's house listening to his older brother's record collection. We came across a cassette by a band called The Tragically Hip and thought they had a weird name, so out of curiosity we threw it on and were totally blown away by what we heard. Later that afternoon we took a bus to the mall and each bought a copy of "Up to Here" at A&A Records and Tapes (remember that store? Wow, I feel old).

A few months later, Muchmusic aired the Hip's Live at the Misty Moon concert, and that pretty much sealed the deal. They were my favorite band from then on.
I first came across the Hip, believe it or not, by seeing them in concert. My friends and I attended a festival in Cuyahoga Falls, OH (No, not Chargrin Falls - but I think the concert was called End Fest or something like that). Anway... the Hip were there as part of the TATH tour and they played 700 Ft Ceiling which really caught my ear, totally sounded unlike anything else that was being played that day. I was hooked from there on out. I've been to something like 5-10 concerts now (most recently in Toledo last fall at the Club Bijou where I first found our about hipbase). Funny now that I think about it, 700 Ft Ceiling, although good, is probably not what I could call a favorite Hip song of mine - maybe in the top 50.
I can honestlly remember my first hip encounter like it was yesterday. It was 1995 and I was 14. My cousin had recently moved out of her parents house to an apartment at Plattsburgh State University. I had always hung out with my cousing because she let me drink and hang with the older kids...(okay I did it for the booze and the older girls but give me a break). So anyways, I'm hanging at her place when she puts in this CD that keeps skipping. So she smacks the player and skips ahead a song or two and the next thing I hear is 38 years old. If she only knew what she was doing by putting that album on. It's quite possible that I'd have a lot more money and a lot fewer CD Towers cluttering my living room.
It's 1990 and I'm 12 years old, hanging out with my best friend Ty listening to his older brothers cassettes (he had great taste in music... and now that I think about so did we Smile)
Amidst the G 'n R, Leslie Spit Treo, 13 Engines, and Soup Dragon tapes there was one called 'Up to Here'. We used to try tapes out based on song titles and this one had a few interesting titles ("what the heck does 'Boots or Hearts' mean?"). I made a copy of the tape before leaving that afternoon (I think I taped over an old Mini Pops tape I had) and listened to it for the rest of the summer. From that point on Hip albums were key components of my music collection.
Oddly enough I didn't see the Hip live until '98 on the Phantom Power tour, but this was mainly because I lived in the sticks for the first 18 years of my life.
Rock On!
