Picked up the disc this morning and I've been listening to it all day. Another fantastic album from one of the greatest storytellers of our time. It's not as catchy or immediate as The Rising, and some of the tunes take a few listens to grow on ya, but once they get their hooks in you, that's it. He's got ya. This album is more about poetry and stories than rock n' roll. It's almost like a sister album to Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad. Thumbs up!

When I saw that Bruce was going solo on this record, my first thought was "Ooooh....Nebraska!". I'm happy to say that my initial instinct was right. From what I've heard, it's excellent. I haven't had the chance to pick it up and give a proper listen...but wow, I can't wait.

Brilliant album, methinks, although like most of Springsteen's stuff it's going to take a while for me to get used to it. I read a vicious negative review on Canoe yesterday, and even though I've learned not to trust the Sun's critics I was still at least a little bit apprehensive when I slid it into my player for the first time. Had no cause to be--gorgeous sounds, solid writing and That Voice (the latter era, Springsteen solo voice, for lack of a better explanation). Awesome record.

I went to a listing/viewing party that a local newspaper and Sony put on here at a local movie theatre.. I loved it. Been a Bruce fan a long time - he always changes it up like this now and again. Some great stories in his songs and the DVD portion is awsome.
From what Ive read, some music critics dont like it, but who cares what they say...

all reviews i've read, really love it..even rolling stone, and they hate anything good...

Out of the five or six reviews I've read so far, only one was negative, and that was the one mentioned above from Canoe.ca.
Ya, I read that one on canoe, the wife seen a not so good one by our illustrious Mike Bell(who usually hates everything good) ... Thats awsome if there are some better ones out there...

I agree, Mike Bell is a freakin' moron.
Good lyrics, yeah; but there seems to be a dearth of good melodies on that record. But I'll give it a few more spins before being too definitive about that.

Mike Bell might be the worst music writer I've ever read. I don't know him, of course, but reading his stuff I get the distinct impression he thinks he's the funniest man alive...except he's not, and he can't write for sh1t. FWIW. :wink:

If you go on Springsteen's official site, a lot of the discussants seem lukewarm or disappointed by the record. Many of them complain that bruce mumbles---they seem to be confusing the man with Phil Collins. If anything, I wish Bruce would get much rougher in his production values and sound. He could sound like Blind Lemon Jefferson with the right producer (Rick Rubin, you there?)
For what it's worth, after several listens, I believe this to be a strong record with one truly outstanding song (the title track) and several other fine, moving tunes. It needs about two catchier melodies to be a *great* album, but it's a strong entry in Bruce's catalogue nonetheless.
The problem with Springsteen fans is that they're all a bunch of esoteric snobs from New Jersey that refuse to acknowledge any album after Born to Run. Screw that. The Boss' best album by FAR is tunnel of love. I look forward to picking up the new one. The first single is a jam.
As much as I love the boss (own every album), I dig Bruce McCullough's quote, "Our love is like a Bruce Springsteen concert....... It's not that great, it's really long..... but man, what energy!"
