According to Carl Wilson at the Globe, the new pope would take a dim view of the Hip:

Hey who knows, maybe PJPII partook in some towards the end of his life for pain relief.

It doesn't surprise me that the new Pope doesn't like Rock. I've never known the catholic church to be big on secular music. It takes special permission to play secular music in a Catholic Church for a wedding, funeral,etc !

Besides, what do you expect from a pope who denounces every religion but catholicism?

I played pipe organ at a friend's wedding recently, and he asked that I play "All Of My Love" by Zeppelin instead of "Here Comes The Bride". It was pretty awesome. During the signing, I played some Beatles, "Little Wing", "Thank You" by Zep... I say, if it's YOUR day, it's should really be YOUR music.

I agree, the catholic church are just too anal, no pun intended :lol:

I've been to many catholic weddings and funerals and have heard secular music played there but it has to go through the priest first.

Huh. When my sister was married in our local church I don't recall anybody saying anything about "Some Enchanted Evening" and a Chris De Burgh song being sung. If she had to ask the priest for permission, it was readily granted.

I've always had good luck with my local priests, but the Church itself (and some of its more conservative manifestations in places other than where I live) makes me quite uncomfortable.

This is, of course, completly different from the last Pope, who would often end his Sunday morning mass by whipping out a guitar and jamming along to "Bad Bad Leroy Brown."

Institutionally, the Catholic Church is a unified body. However, what you find from country to country, from diocese to diocese, and from church to church is very different. There are the "conservative fundamentalist" churches that rely heavily on the Bible for their way of doing things. There are also "progressive" churches that are more concerned with marketing themselves to society. The same dichotomy exists within Protestant denominations.

Come on... he's Catholic, he's the Pope for crying out loud... he's not supposed to like rock music!

he;s a hardliner conservative, you should hear what he says about homosexuals.

that said, it does not paint catholics one colour, or all popes one colour either.

You have to admire his conviction and dedication.

To be the devil's advocate...
rock music hasn't had a lot of good things to say about the Catholic Church. Also, the Pope has to draw the line somewhere...the doctrines of the Catholic faith are certainly not similar to the values imbued in rock'n'roll. As the "Nautonnier", Bendict cannot come out in favour of rock...it would go against the church of which he is a figurehead.

That's not to say I agree with his or the church's stance on rock. Quite to the contrary, actually...
