So if Yankee fans just booing a player makes them the "worst in baseball" as some on here have said, what does throwing punches at players make? cratch:

Yankees' Gary Sheffield has confrontation with fan during Red Sox' 8-5 win

BOSTON (AP) - The New York Yankees got into another scuffle with fans on a testy night at Fenway Park. This time, Gary Sheffield was in the middle of it.

Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning of Boston's 8-5 victory Thursday night when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm. "I just felt something hit me in the mouth," Sheffield said. "I don't know if he hit me or not, it felt like it. I thought my lip was busted."

After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back to the infield. Another fan tossed a beer at Sheffield, who whirled around with a cocked fist but restrained himself.

He shouted in the face of the first man. A security official quickly jumped over the three-foot wall to separate the two.

"It could have been worse if I didn't hold my composure," Sheffield said. "I almost snapped, but the thing is I thought about the consequences."

The fan was ejected from the ballpark but not arrested.

"It's just a baseball game," Sheffield said. "To get punched in the mouth, you don't expect that in a baseball game."

During the 2003 AL playoffs, two Yankees players got into a brawl with a Red Sox groundskeeper in New York's bullpen. Relief pitcher Jeff Nelson and outfielder Karim Garcia were charged with assault but agreed to a deal last October that called for the charges against them to be dropped in six months.

The near-fight between Sheffield and the Boston fan was the latest problem between fans and players at a sporting event.

On Nov. 19, players and fans exchanged punches in the stands near the end of a Pacers-Pistons game in one of the worst brawls in NBA history. The mayhem left several people injured and prompted a police investigation.

Last September, the Texas Rangers got into a fight with fans in Oakland, and Rangers reliever Frank Francisco was arrested after throwing a chair into the stands that hit a woman and broke her nose.

Edgar Renteria's RBI double in the eighth broke a 5-5 tie, and Boston took two of three from its rival to even the season series at three games each.

Randy Johnson gave up three homers for only the 12th time in his career, and Red Sox manager Terry Francona and hitting coach Ron Jackson were ejected after questioning calls by plate umpire Greg Gibson.

Johnson left with the score 5-5 after seven innings and Tom Gordon (0-1) fell behind before getting an out. Johnny Damon led off the eighth with a single and scored on a double by Renteria, who had made the last out for St. Louis in Boston's sweep of last year's World Series.

After an intentional walk to David Ortiz, Varitek hit a ball down the right-field line that hugged the curved wall and led to all the trouble.

"We have to give Sheffield a lot of credit for restraining himself the way he did," Damon said.

On a related note, A-ROD should have gotten a standing ovation for saving that 8 year old boy's life... but instead got booed as usual. :?

Sheffield is a roid ragin' monster. Sure what that boston fan did was pretty stupid but sheff is still a scumbag regardless.

I liked it when that dude chucked the beer on him...at $7.50 a piece, a bit of a waste if you ask me, but comical nonetheless....gotta love Boston fans....North America's version of the European soccer lunatics.

Always reminds me of, and I think it was Boston that NHL game where the fan punched the player on top of the head over the glass and a brawl broke out with the fans and players, old time baby! Im not saying its good for fans to hit players and stuff but this rivalry is fantastic, its making for good tv and adding some life to the games. A great rivalry is just what sports needs and I feel sadly the NHL has lost alot of that over the years.

Every incident involving a fan assaulting a player on the diamond or in the bullpen takes us all one step closer to an MLB mandate which requires that protective fencing or screening be installed along the field in ALL ballparks.

It will be a sad day indeed, but it's coming....

Idiotic fans better start pulling their stupid heads out of their moron asses before they forever ruin the ballpark intimacy that makes baseball so special.

Sorry, but have you seen David Wells' two starts? Their pitching staff isn't half as good as it was last year with Pedro, Derek Lowe and a hugry Curt Schilling. Last year the Sox had something to prove, this year with all the attention I'll bet anything they have a World Series Hangover.

Ever read Bill Simmons on ESPN? He's a huge Sox fan and admits that all this attention isn't going to be good. I mean, really, was it necessary for some of them to appear on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy?

No World Championships since the Babe was sold definitely constituted a curse. However, I think we'd be hard pressed to call this a "recursing" unless they have another dry spell of, say, 50 years or more. They were 2004 World Champions. I think "recursing" may be getting a little ahead of ourselves. Still, I agree with the sentiment that this probably will not be Boston's year again.

Wells looked pretty good tonight.

The Yanks' pitching is pretty suspect too - especially when you consider their payroll is over $200 million. Johnson's been hit hard in two of his three starts. Pavano's had ONE good season. Jaret Wright is a bum. And Kevin Brown is <<surprise!>> hurting already. Giambi is clearly not the player he was when on the 'roids and Tino and Bernie Williams both have looked washed up this season. Obviously it is still very early, but this is the most unimpressive Yankee team in years.

Who knows? Maybe this is the year someone else in the AL East makes some noise. :thumb:

We are 1/16 through the season. Wells sure looked impressive tonight with 7 IP and 0 runs allowed. Guess that means they are gonna repeat huh? Let things unfold a bit before you start writing off the defending champs.

One of these days, a Yankee-Red Sox game is going to devolve into (and I hate to use this term, but I can't think of a better one) the mother of all brawls, one that will make the "Malice at the Palace" look like a ballet recital. And I don't mean a regular "base-brawl", but one that lasts at least a half-hour and has everyone on each team absolutely beating the sh*t out of each other... players all bruised and bloodied, or worse... the whole deal.

Maybe you'll think I'm exaggerating, but I'm serious... I'm convinced it's going to happen one day... you heard it here first.

i think that guy in the stands is pretty lucky that "the Chef" didn't hop in and beat his ass down, Shef's a pretty big guy!
