I just downloaded a 'fast version' of So Hard Done By from thehundredthmeridian.com (from the ultimate rarities folder)
I thought it was a great version, but it totally sounds like it was from the Fully Completely recording sessions. Sounds like a finished produced track and has the FC sound, especially the drums. I figure it was cut from the album. It resurfaced on DFN in a totally different form.
I was wondering if anyone had any facts on this
i've got no facts about recording dates but i do think that if you take any song in the hip's catalogue and make it (at least) 65% eerier it would fit right in with the rest of the tracks on DFN.

As long as you have the same sped-up version of SHDB that I do, it came on the Scared CD-Single. On the single, SHDB is listed as being recorded and mixed by Chris Tsangerides, who, of course, only produced FC. So there's your proof.

I remember reading somewhere that the boys weren't thrilled with the drum sound on Fully Completely, and didn't enjoy the recording process in general for that album, which makes me question why they released another song from those sessions as a b side. Can anyone confirm this?
I've never been a fan of the snare sound on that album either, it sounds too much like 1987, ya know. I mean, it isn't all bad... the songs are great, but the snare sound is too much at times.

Doc
I have heard that they weren't happy with the recording process of FC. Appparently they went to Europe to write and record the material, instead of having the material already written. Apparently, they were locked up in some European castle and hammered it out. No one liked it, and vowed they would never do something like that again.
This is from an old thread about recording Fully Completely:
Gord Sinclair quote from Canadian music book I read:
"Chris was a real schooled producer. He had his way of doing things, so there wasn't a lot of ensemble writing and playing on that record. It was by-the-books. He was pretty hot off of working with Concrete Blonde so we were happy to work with him, but in retrospect we realized how incredibly naive we were at the time that we were making that record - 'What? The band shouldn't be around for the mix? Oh, Okay"
Downie adds:
"It was a really cold kind of experience. The five of us were really brought together because there was nothing else to do. We stayed in a really depressing hotel in a nothing area of London, then went off every day to another area of London to work. The actual in-studio time was a great experience, all very organized. It seems with every record we invent a new process of writing. I was definatley moving into the cockpit in terms of writing the words, so I was getting more diligent about my note-keeping and all that kind of stuff."
"Have Not Been The Same" confirms the now well known story of the boys being displeased with certain aspects of FC's quality.
As for "So Hard," I've always liked the released version better, but I think I'm in a strict minority. Most folks who list it as one they're "hoping to hear" at shows I've been to, always follow that up with "and I hope they play it fast."
I'm partial to its strip club momentum.
i like the slow version better, the groove is killer, the percussion parts sound/are way better, and i find the down tempo verion better suits the lyrical content, plus it makes it that much better when they finally let the guitars rip. also, i'll add, it was killer to hear live, and it'd still be pretty cool to hear them play the fast version live too, it'd be great as part of an encore.
I like the slow version better as well. Its my favourite song live, especially in a small smoky club in the US.

Here, here. Heard it in the HOB Chicago in '02 with Steve Berlin on sax. It just fit the atmosphere so well.
Ya i like the slower version more at the end of the day too i think.
But I was delighted to hear this fast version.
Why cant I love both?

Do I HAVE to choose.

I totally agree, I think the slow version suits the lyrics better...and it just sounds grittier...i dont know, i like the slow version better...but if played live, start slow and finish crazy fast...that would be cool, kinda like how they play fully completely most of the time....just my thoughts...

Doc...my thoughts completely (fully) on the snare drum. It's very 80s rock sound and is most unique for a hip recording. You can really see how the boys decided to retreat into the murkiness that is DFN. However, without running the numbers, I'd say that the tunes form FC make their way onto more setlists than any other album.

I had a thought this evening on my way home from work while basking in the goodness of Fully Completely (the song). It has the same bass riff as So Hard Done By, which could possibly be a reason it was never on the album and released solely as a demo or b-side or what have you.
Just a thought...
