Haha.
I heard that ipods were made to crash after one year (after the warranty is up) and it seems true, as I've had numerous friends with problems. Any verification on this?
I'm closing in on two years with my iPod, and it's still rockin'. I use it almost everyday at the gym.
And I think that your numerous friends are all pulling your leg. Maybe their battery just died; the system still works, it just needs power.
what I was told was that the lithium ion batteries only last about 2 years then you have to replace it, right now they cost around $130 bucks. if/when mine takes a dirt nap, I'll gladly replace it, I love my iPod it makes my job a million times better.

I've had mine for about a year and a half and it gets used every day - all day at work, when I'm in the car, when I walk the dog, and when I've got control of the stereo when I'm at home. I haven't had a single problem with it. I doubt the battery would last 8 hours anymore, but I don't need it to.
iPods kick ass. Enjoy!

[sarcasm]Further to this, do they program them differently if you buy the Apple Protection Plan - which extends the warranty to three years? Or what about for me, I bought mine on my Visa Gold card which doubles all manufacturers warranties?[/sarcasm]
But seriously, I think your friends are exaggerating a bit, or you've got a circle of friends with the same terrible luck. Every iPod owner I know has had nothing but praise for their's, and most of them are looking forward to upgrading to a new iPod if/when their funds allow.
I've got a Creative Zen Micro 5 gig -- it's great! Removable battery and it sounds amazing. I highly recommend it.
If you're in the market try to get a "limited edition" model -- they throw in an extra battery.
One caveat -- they advertise for 12 hours of battery life. Nowhere close. 6-8 is more like, depending on if you like to use EQ and all the bells and whistles.
Anyway, I tried out both and preferred the Zen Micro to the IPOD. There close, but I liked the Micro better.
Is there a hard-drive based mp3 player with external microphone recording capabilities that can record as wav (or any lossless format)? I was looking at iRiver players, but I think some of their models can only record as mp3, and I can't imagine any of the mp3 players with built in microphones (for voice recording) would produce good quality recordings at a concert.
So I guess the Sony Mini Disc is still the best way to go?
The Zen mico has built in recording capabilities. They are only mildly better than the Ipod.
However, I know of no MP3 player that allows recording in lossless format. I'm sure there are some in the pipeline, though. Eastern manufacturers like iriver and samsung are the best bets, I think.
