A former U.S. Marine who participated in capturing ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the public version of his capture was fabricated.

Ex-Sgt. Nadim Abou Rabeh, of Lebanese descent, was quoted in the Saudi daily al-Medina Wednesday as saying Saddam was actually captured Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, and not the day after, as announced by the U.S. Army.

"I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced," Abou Rabeh said.

"We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed," he said.

He said Saddam himself fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then they shouted at him in Arabic: "You have to surrender. ... There is no point in resisting."

"Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam's capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well," Abou Rabeh said.

Abou Rabeh was interviewed in Lebanon.

Basically his work vs. the government...
Not surprising in the least...Americans are notorious (and other countries as well, but they seem to have the power to get the word out more than others) at overdramatising events/staging events to evoke emotion and churn up excitement back home.
There is a slew of conspiracy theorists out there that still don't believe they actually landed on the moon....and you know what, I wouldn't put them past it.

Although I don't totally believe my government about some things, why does it matter? We got him.

Also with the time difference, it might have been the day they captured him.

That capture was close to my heart, my Grandfather fought with the 4th Infantry in WW2 and they captured Sadam.

GO IVY!
 why am i not surprised?

At the risk of igniting some kind of political Canada vs. Bush strife, may I say that it does matter, more than we can possibly know. If the United States is lying about the basic pretense of his capture (which you yourself) admit is secondary to the fact they got him), what else have they lied about? If this is true (and I'd buy this guy's story before Herr Rumsfelds), isn't it obvious that the whole "Saddam was hiding in a hole like an animal" stunt was a (succesful) PR campaign to desensitize a population so easily bought by bright lights and fancy graphics to the completely illegal detainment of the leader of a soveriegn country. In short, can't we see that Saddam's capture in a hole was staged, degrading the US's shoddy moral ground to be in Iraq in the first place?

Betcha won't see this story on FOX (unless that's the network that gets Saddam's public execution rights)

I know about someone who posted something about George Bush on their journal and had the Secret Service show up on their doorstep.

Freedom of speech my ass.

Really? That's freakin scary. Makes me think about all the anti-Bush stuff I've posted over the past couple of years. And there's a LOT of it. It's a good thing I'm living up here, eh.
Hopefully I'll be living up there someday, too.... and that's all I'll say.
It isn't a new suggestion.

The Kurdish press announced that Saddam had been captured a day or two before the US announced it had captured him. This story was covered at the time, mostly by European newspapers.

The story at that time was that Saddam was actually captured by a Kurdish/Iraqi special forces unit that had the advantage of being able to speak the language and win the trust of sources. After he was captured, he was supposedly held briefly and then placed in the underground bunker so the US forces could "capture" him.

Note that these two stories are fundamentally similar: both have Saddam being captured by special units made up of Arabic-speaking soldiers, and both have a subsequent "capture" being staged for the cameras. But does that mean that this story is actually based on the other one?

It's not the first time US forces have been accused of staging a major event for the cameras. The rescue of Pte. Lynch was, according to some, staged. Iraqi forces had supposedly left the area and there was no resistance, and the team that rescued her was supposedly guided to her room by Iraqi doctors.

Are these stories credible? Well, they're unproven, but there's evidence for them. And there's no doubt that the US government is aware of the importance of PR and is willing to lie to the public.

Remember the story of the Kuwaiti incubator babies from Gulf War I? Completely fabricated, the "witness" actually being the daughter of a Kuwaiti diplomat who was given a script and coached by a PR firm working for the administration. A PR firm that employed a woman named Victoria Clarke, who of course became the Pentagon flack for Gulf War II.

We'll never know what the truth is, but our grandchildren might.

Maybe that's because its bogus. Ever think of that? Hell, if CNN (Communist News Network) won't jump all over a story like this, then you know it's absurd.

http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/

The frequency and fervor with which some of you people buy into these anti-Bush, anti-US military, and US gov't. conspiracy stories really makes you look ridiculous. It's as if you can barely contain your jealously, bitterness, insecurity, paranoia, or feelings of inferiority, whichever is responsible for this rabble-rousing.

And you wonder why US media pokes so much fun at everything Canadian?

I also think we need to wait and see what other reputable networks, news agencies pick this up.
