What are they for? Are they to prevent our signing from throwing him off, some kinda monitor so he can hear the band, kick-ass cool fashion accessory? What?
I've seen many other artists wear them and I think they're so he can hear everyone in the band playing and singing
They are indeed used so he can hear himself.
They are in-ear monitors... they do the same job as the monitors on the stage (the ones that he used to walk on, nearly falling into the area between the fans and the stage), only better; letting him hear his voice, and the music of the band so that he stays in sync and in tune with the rest of them.
They connect to the little black box he wears on his hip. Throughout the show he adjusts the volume to compensate for the sound in the room.

they also allow the sound on stage to be quieter, which in turn is better for the whole band

You notice he removes them while playing his acoustic. This is beacuse he has stationary floor monitors. The in-ear monitors is because he is always moving while not playing guitar.
all of the members of dmb use them. like chris said, they are In-ear monitors. they transmit on an FM frequency. they all gord (or anyone wearing them) to listen to a certain mix of the instruments on stage.
in dmb's case, each member has a different mix. they are also used by the members to talk to each other while on stage.
there are quite a few shows that have been taped from the IEM transmission. dmb caught on to it a few years ago and now have a scanner that will detect any receivers that are trying to pick up the signal.
many times the quality of these tapes are not as good as the AUD sources. but every once in a while you get a really good sounding one.
There's also some ethical considerations to consider when picking up IEM sourced tapes -- these are private transmissions and often include stage banter not meant to be aired publically.
They are interesting, but voyeuristic. In my opinion, not mean for public consumption -- but, just my opinion.

They use it for the hard of hearing customers.
I know some recordings like that were floating around.

yeah. i agree with you. dmb has banned them and even tho are still taped, very few IEM sourced shows make it into trading circles

that is different. that is a feed from the soundboard. they would hear the same thing the rest of the audience would hear.
iem's are different because each band member would havea different mix. for example, gord d may want more bass and more of bobby's guitar. but johnny might want to hear less of bobby's guitar and more of paul's.

As a non musician, can somebody tell me how important is it to hear yourself while playing?
What did musicians do before these things? Hendrix seemed to do okay.
