i'm listening to CBC today, and find out that maestro fresh wes is on the list, but not the hip?? what the hell is wrong with that..well..here's your chance to vote... http://www.cbc.ca/50tracks/thelist.html make sure that the hip make this list
I would call Courage an essential of the '90s.

I caught a breif glimpse of the 90's list when Jian Gomeshi was on TV two or three nights ago, "Courage" was on it, maybe it got voted off. How does this thing work anyway?
Courage is on the list now, I'm suprised there's no Rush on the 80's list they were voted best band of the 80's in Canada. Tom Sawyer or the Spirit of Radio should definately be there.

Is the "telephone city" Brantford?
This is a good time for....
"So your name wasn't on the listing,
or in the catalogue of lists,
or on the error heavily listing,
oh, how could your name be missed?
See the bull moose checking out another's rack
there's no point in this....."
So, who cares? The entire thing is basically dumb. A group of panelists decides what the great Canadian songs are, based on their own tastes. Guess what? I can do that too.
And one of the panelists is Leah frigging Mclaren. What do you expect?
I don't mind Leah Maclaren, but here's to Skippy's general argument, which is on the $$$. I did read that the host of the show was horrified by the Hip's omission, apparently he's worried about their fans 'freaking out.'
All of this symptomizes the fact that the Hip have always occupied an awkward place among Canada's urban and would-be urbane cognoscenti: too tough and urgent to qualify as the kind of kitsch they'll endorse (Maestro Fresh-Wes), insufficiently temporary to be acclaimed for catching a momentary zeitgeist a la Jagged Little Pill, too old-fashioned to qualify as the kind of urban-sounding, technologically 'forward' stuff that typically fits the cognoscenti's self-image, and too popular to serve the commentators' would-be 'street cred' as nose-to-the-underground hipsters. Plus the Hip have all those hooting 'Hip-'chanting baseball-cap-wearing frat boy fans at their concerts...how gauche.
The Hip are both the best and the most important band Canada has ever produced. End of story.
Besides, anyone who relies on the CBC to tell them what's cool is deeply hopeless in any case.

courage is only on a list to vote on..it hasn't "made" the list yet..you can vote on it..my piss off was that 'let your backbone slide' did make it, and courage hasn't....YET!!!
Ya, Courage needed to be on that list.

I think so..I always confuse Brantford with Brampton, but Im pretty sure its Brantford, Gretzky's home town, didnt his dad work for Bell for like 20 years or so??

That's like the time, I think it was Entertainment Weekly, did the top comics or comic performers or whatever and the list was just HORRIBLE. Just like when the AFI put out the 50 *insert adjective* movies of all time list and it was horrible.
It's also like a Grammy. I mean, yes, it's nice to recognized by your peers but I'd rather have lots of fans and no awards than lots of awards and no fans.
I just checked the list, and 'Courage' is on there; listen to the panelists 'pitch' as to why it should be there... sounds like the guy knows what he's talking about...

Yep. Never made more than $25,000 in a year according to Wayne's book, and his basement (The same humble home he and phillis (sp?) always had) now contains hundreds of thousands of dollars of Wayne's merchandise and collectables.
Now that Trudeau, Mr. Dress-up, Pierre Berton and Maurice Richard are all gone, Walter might be as close to a national father figure as we've got these days.
And yeah, Brantford is the city where the telephone was invented, I was just wondering if that's where the poster was refering to in his profile thing. I grew up in between Brantford and Brampton: as kids, we knew one was the place where Wayne Gretzky took his first shots, and the other was where you were most likely to get shot.
