To me its pretty stupid because our gov't knows and I'm not sure the exact figures but Tobacco and Alcohol kill more people than Mary-Jane ever frikkin did. But Its all about control at the end of the day, the power of the State over whats in the publics best interests...
From CP:

"RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli went further, suggesting it's time not just to crack down on grow ops, but also to re-examine the idea of decriminalizing simple possession of small amounts of pot.

'We don't solve anything in society by legalizing things or by pretending they're not harmful to society,' Zaccardelli told a Parliament Hill news conference.

'If any good comes out of this tragedy, it's that we will reflect on some of these issues and, as Canadians, we may look at it from a different perspective.'"

Yes, I see the error of my ways. It's wildly inappropriate to move from the deaths of four police officers to policy....

It's not about control - its about money first, and political correctness second.

1. There will be no thwarting of one of the most powerful lobbies in all of politics. The dollars are far too big (see my above post).

2. PC says 'drugs are bad' despite how many people smoke their stuff and drink their wine. So any movement to legalize a known heath hazard will never get "legs" - it matters not how much more harmful tobacco and alcohol are compared to weed. The fact is that they are already legal, and if anything, they will become illegal before pot becomes legal. And since alcohol will NEVER will become illegal again, well, then pot will NEVER be legal (see of reason #1).

That's it, that's all, that's everything.
Its a sad day. I am still unsure how one man was able to take down 4 officers. I assume a mistake was made in their raid. The CBC last night was saying the officers went in when the farm was abandon and then the gunman came in after and caught them all. So sad. Guy were just doing their job.
Quote:The RCMP deaths were a direct result of a failed social policy...prohibition of Marijuana. Regardless of the scale of the operation, it would not have existed if pot were legalized. If the ordinary citizen were allowed to grow and cultivate pot for personal use, THESE OPERATIONS WOULD NOT EXIST. Further, if the average citizen were allowed personal growth and use, then the only mules and pushers there would be would be involved in the import and sale of the evil refined white powders. In those cases, I have no problem with John Law dishing out what ever punishment reasonable.

don't you guys think that if they legalize pot that things like this will always continue. it'll just be another drug, maybe a meth lab or whatever, the point is that it's not about the drug it's about the drug dealers selling and making money off whatever drugs they can make.

I cant confirm this of course, but my understanding was that the officers went in guns drawn looking around and the "psychopath" in question took them out one by one with a high-powered rifle from a good distance, they probably never knew what hit em. Not to knock police or RCMP's but I think the approach the officers took was the wrong one and it cost them their lives.

Well - how many of these 'things' do you see occurring over bootleg alcohol manufacture / sale? Or over tobacco? Virtually zero. Once something can be bought legally, there is no reason to kill people over it....

Apparently they went in on Tuesday to investigate stolen property, the owner wasn't there, but the cops found the grow-op. They got a seach warrent and came back on Wednesday, still no owner, so two of the cops stayed the night to wait for the owner. Thursday morning, they were joined by two more cops. The owner came back, discovered the cops were there, and ambushed them with a high powered rifle. They were wearing light armour, but certainly not enough to stop a high powered rifle.

i'm just saying that whether pot is legal or not, this sad incident could have happend with any kind of drug bust, does that mean we should legalize all drugs.

Of course they will, but to a far lesser degree.

The portion of the population that is criminalized by their use of MJ is tremendous. If people were given an option to grow and use their own, then there would be no profit motive in MJ, and those wishing to make money on drugs would be forced to deal in evil white powders, like meth.

But think about it, if all you want to do is puff, you won't BE FORCED to deal with a criminal drug underworld...you can grow your own or call your neighbor. Now, as it stands, you have to seek out criminals who have connections to large scale drug trafficers.

The pharmaceutical industry (I make drugs for a living) has a 'risk/benifit' analysis when putting forth a new drug...will the known risk of side effects be balanced by the relief from the primary illness the user is taking the drug for.

If you look at all those jailed, all those killed, all those lives destroyed by "The War On Drugs", when it comes to MJ, the risk/benifit is obvious.
Legalize it and let people grow their own. Less people will become criminalized, resources will be more apporpriately applied (to drugs that are actually dangerous) and lives won't be ruined for doing what a large portion of the population has already given their actual or tacit approval to.

nobody said legalize all drugs, just pot. yes, things like this will still happen in other raids, but guess what the majoriy of raids are on? pot. think about all the time/money/resources (and potentially lives) that could be saved...it only makes sense, as far as my original comments, i was just giving my initial reaction, my opinion...i said it was a tradgedy, what do you want from me...the crying emoticon?
Cry Sad those would have worked.

Give it a rest man. He didn't do or say anything wrong, so stop trying to vilify him.
