Just went on iTunes to download the new killers song that I cant get out of my head and I decided to check out the hip's info page. i think a few people in this forum might take offense to the review that appears on their artist page....
"Currently residing in the "Where Are They Now?" file, these Canadians were on the verge of making it big in the late '80s and early '90s. Their almost unique blues-influenced pop just never caught on with Americans (nor the rest of the world) as much as it did in Canada. -Mark M."
I believe that originally comes from Rolling Stone's band page for The Hip at rollingstone.com

I remember reading that and thinking, "God, have you guys never heard of Google?" Nowadays there's really no excuse for having NO idea a band is still active--especially not THIS active.
(Although the correct answer might well be, "Kingston. Writing for the next album. Where did you think?")
"almost made it big in the 80s?"
Come on. That's a stretch.
Almost made it big in 1994 is more like it.
However, I don't think you can seriously quibble with the line: "... just never caught on with Americans (nor the rest of the world) as much as it did in Canada."

Has anyone ever heard / read that Petty, Mellencamp and Steve Earle have influenced the Hip?

There is a pretty strong southern rock sound on their early albums.

Especially Road Apples, IMO.

Agreed, it's a helluva roadhouse album. Time spent in Memphis and New Orleans probably at the root.
As an american I can say who the hell cares if they caught on here? It wasn't very long ago that we all had pet fricken rocks! This is just 1 reason why I don't really care for Rolling Stone.

No doubt. We're talking about a mag that once referred to the band Live as a "white Hootie and the Blowfish." Talk about idiotic. That magazine is a joke.
I remember reading a story in Time Magazine (I know...it was the only thing in my dentist's office..I've since changed dentists) right after IBE came out that gave the album a modest review, then went on to marvel that a band actually managed to continue making albums without being big in the US. The joker writing the article didn't seem to understand that
a. There are people in Canada
b. We don't necessarily like all the fluff music from south of the border being jammed down our throats.
We must forgive them. If they are stupid enough to reward acts like Eminem, Janet Jackson and U2, much can't be expected.
Eminem and U2 are both incredibly talented...maybe you want to rethink that one there sport

(not to mention HTDMAAB and Encore (while not being the best either have ever released) were two of the brighter spots on last year's mainstream radar).

You'd be surprised how often that point comes up in political discussions too.

I agree that U2 cd does suck, I bought it with high hopes, was likening it at first, then it just bored me to listen to it and I realized how crummy it is, I havent listened to it for weeks now, Im ready to sell it to be honest with you. As for eminem, he's got as much musical talent as my asshole, I cant stand his tired act, it sure isnt music to my ears. :rambo: :rambo:
