So, I've known this word for like forever because it's used back in my hometown 30 mins from the Canadian border in upstate NY. My boyfriend is from downstate, about 2 hours north of NYC. He came home with a touque all of the firemen were given at the firehouse. I told him it was very cool. He proudly announced "That's called a touque". I had to keep myself from laughing and told him "Yes, dear, I know they are, my dad always wore a touque".

I was thinking about this and I noticed that on TV when there's a bankrobbery they say "knit cap" or "ski cap" or "winter hat" even back home, it's never "touque"

Touque, I used to be annoyed by it but now it's almost a funny word.

I don't know why I'm posting this, I'm just enjoying the word touque tonight lol

Growing up in northern Ohio, we always referred to them as either “sock caps” or “stocking caps”. Most references were non-specific (e.g. “hat”) but some just called them “winter hats”.

In college, I knew a guy from Buffalo who always referred to them as “toboggans”. In Ohio, the only thing we called a “toboggan” was the large, wooden snow sled with a curved front:

that guy must have been an idiot becuase ive lived in buffalo all my life and like you ive only called the big ass wooden sleds tobaggans.

I was just about to post the same thing. I was visiting relatives in NC and I heard that reference on the news. "...The robbers were wearing toboggans..." I was more than a little confused.

It really cracks me up when I'm playing the sims and one of them gets crabby and says it. lol :lol: :lol:

I was roommates with a guy from North Carolina when I lived in Scotland and he called it a "fuzzy cap" or a "wooly cap". We had another guy from Vermot who was the same way.

I couldn't convince them that we Canadians had a much more efficient actual *word* for it: toque.

Toques rule. Except when you're eight and you're too cool to wear one.

I used to HATE to wear a winter hat and now that I'm an adult I can't WAIT to wear my winter hat because I've got like the coolest polar fleece winter hat EVER!

BUT...

there are toques that happen to be way too cool for some people...

example:

Here's me with my totally cool hat. Funny thing is the guy with me in the pic IS WEARING A TOUQUE! :lol:

BTW, that was me at my highest weight back on New Year's eve 2001 or 2002, it's amazing how much I've changed. I have a first night button on my hat
