Huh? So the kids are alright afterall.
I was surprised at how many young'uns attended the Summer festival gigs this year.
And as an aside: Coolest teacher I ever had, Grade 9, Mr. Gerwin: we studied "Wheat Kings" as part of the English poetry portion of the course.
I'm trying so so so hard to be that teacher, but my mentor just won't let me. Bah. I get to work on a six week poetry unit with the kids centered around...
Out of the Dust. Its the sort of book that (some) teachers love, and most other people hate. *sigh* What I wouldn't give to do a unit centered around Nautical Disaster...historical implication, literary form... I think I'll go gag over this awful book some more.

Can you suggest supplemental stuff? Might be a way to sneak in ABAC or Giftshop... they're pretty general "existential looks at life" poems I'd think. Or do you have to stick to what The Man tells ya? Is

I have to stick to what she says to the letter. On my first day in the classroom, she said, "I'm a very nice person, usually, but if you cross me in my classroom, watch out!". So...yeah. I'll be on my best behavior.
Out of the Dust is indeed about the depression...and the dust bowl. Its utter schlock. Sentimental, tacky crap that I would NEVER make my class read. Ugh. Anyone have suggestions in terms of career change?

Students still searching for that perfect gut should head to the Carpenter Center today at 1 p.m. for round two of “American Film Criticism” with visiting lecturer Elvis Mitchell, who regaled students last year by drinking with Bill Murray during class and assigning no reading for the entire course.
Last semester “Professor” Mitchell went from star film critic at The New York Times to, as Larry Summers characterized him in an interview last spring, “Who?” How far will he fall this time around?
If the first class is any indication, pretty fucking far. Our spies report that, true to form, the dreadlocked critic delivered a threadbare syllabus and a rambling lecture on “pretty much whatever he felt like talking about.” Added another attendee, “Pootie Tang may or may not have been mentioned three times.”
