I have an ultra cool, ultra inexpensive, Epiphone Les Paul Special (Antique Sunburst).
I got the guitar and The Pod last year so I could learn to be a rock star!
It's taking longer than I thought to achieve stardom, but I'm having fun learning.

It really is a personal preference. This topic has been discussed in other threads, so search the advice of others there as well. I would suggest you go to your local store/s and play em' all. Find the one that you like most...let it sing, let it flirt with you a little until you find the right gal for you. I started with a Yamaha FG 403 MS, it was very inexpensive and sounds great still considering the price...but as I said let your ear and your wallet guide you.
1. Yamaha FG 403 MS
2. Larrivee LV-03 RE
3. 1967 Fender Villager 12-string
4. Fender Squire P-Bass

That's good advice, but not for a beginner. You have to know a little bit about what to look for first.
You have to start by deciding on acoustic vs. electric. Then there's a whole thread worth of advice for each one....

what i currently own:
-1972 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with special red to yellow sunburst that was only used for a couple years, they then used a different ret to yellow
-1981 Gibson Sonex (something like that) this looks like a les paul but has a bolt on neck, the body is made of press board i think, something heavy, it was mat black but when i got it i had the neck refinished to its natural wood colour and painted the body silver
-1980 12 string acoustic made by a canadian company that i think no longer exists
yamaha 6 string acoustic, cheepy from costco
but now i mainly play drums
-pearl export series, 6 piece chrome finish
what i have owned
- Fender squire strat (my 1st guitar) made in china, black with rosewood neck
- Fender Jaguar reisuue, i bought this new in 97, tobaco sunburst (black to brown) boy do i miss this guitar, there is no guitar that comes close to the beauty of this in my eye

What I own now:
2003 PRS Custom 22 - Cherry sunburst. This thing is my baby. I LOVE it. (I also realized at the Halifax show that Robbie plays the same thing, although he's got it with the bird inlays, which I couldn't get...)
2004 Takamine EGS-330SC - I bought this in August, and WOW... Big step up from the old acoustic... I also love this guitar. A lot.
2002 Fender Blues Junior (Amp) - This is a little tube amp. But it gets VERY loud for its size. And tubes are killer. Very much worth the extra cost IMO.
What I have owned:
2000 Squier Strat - piece of crap. Sold to a friend for like $150, including a little practice amp.
2001 Yamaha AEX-520 - This was my big step up from the Strat-o-crapper. Les Paul shape, but bigger, and semi-hollow body. Sounded killer, but got blown out of the water and shelved once I got the PRS.
2001 Seagull S6+ Cherry - I beat the crap out of this guitar. Soft topped (cherry) and it got more than it's fair share of dings in the time I had it. Action was a little high, which is what drove me to replace it. Sold to the same friend as the Squier (he's basically converting himself from bass via my old gear
).
I also currently own a POD v.2.0, and a Sound Blaster external sound card which I run into my laptop to record stuff. It's not the absolute best system ever, but it works well enough... Cool Edit Pro is my buddy
Goals for the future:
I really want a Les Paul. I'll eventually break down and get one, probably an Epiphone, just to save cost, but I love the sound you can get from them... They weigh a ton though...
I also want a big stack. There's no point really at the moment, as I have no use for it, but I want to own one... This is pretty low on the priority list at the moment...
