These things are the most frustrating things I have encountered in alongtime!

I hate my glasses, but I hate these things more!
Laser Eye Surgery? Is it covered by your provincial plan? I think we Ontarians have to foot the bill ourselves, but I've read it works wonders.
I can not imagine how anyone can deal with contacts. I tried once and couldn't even get it into my eye. My eyes are okay except for reading so I'll continue to perch spectacles on the bridge of my nose till the day I die.
I wouldnt be able to survive without my contacts. They do seem to fuck up right when you need em (ie Hip Concerts on several occasions). But they are the best. I practically live at the beach in the summer and glasses just wont do.

Never had much problems getting them in my eyes. But I have had trouble getting them in the case after a night of partying. More than a couple of pairs have become crispy pieces of garbage due to my drunkeness.
Contacts are a pain, but now I couldn't survive without them. I resisted getting them for ages but I'm a pretty avid photographer and contacts make it so much easier. Plus when I wear my glasses now there is a notable difference in clarity - I can see so much better with my contacts. There are times that I just want to wash them down the sink but the good far outweighs the bad.

And I've thought about the whole Lasik/laser surgery thing but I'm chicken. I know lots of people who have had it and love it but you know the one person out of 1,000 that has problems? That would be me. I just know it.

Yeah, I guess there's always a risk, plus it is a relatively new procedure. We don't yet know what happens to laser/lasik treated eyes forty years down the road.

Yeah, the long term effects is the other thing that bothers me. One of my friends had it done back when they first started the laser surgery, 11-12 years ago. So far he's been fine, no problems. But what about in another 10 years? No one knows.
I had the Lasik surgery done in December of 2002 and one day has not gone by that I don't thank myself for having it done. I can't remember how many eye irritations/infections I had, how many times I lost a contact lens, or tore one for that matter.
I got up the next day after my surgery seeing 20/15 (better than 20/20) and my prescription has not changed one bit, I still see 20/15 in both eyes. And this is from someone who used to see 20/200...which is really blind!!! If you are a suitable candidate (as not everyone is) take the plunge, your eyes, and your wallet will thank you in the long run.

Goulet!!

What type waiver if any did you sign before the surgery? I understand that in same cases people who have had the procedure are unable to drive at night.

I use contacts and would be lost without them.
My wife just went for the consultation.
The two side effects they told her about were:
1. Night vision - halos around all the lights.
2. Dry eyes - they even mentioned an implant type thing were it waters your eyes.
LONG MESSAGE ALERT!!!!

Yes you do sign a waiver, something to the effect of "although the chance of major complications are 0.02% (or something ridiculously low like that) we bare no responsibility...yada yada yada"

Yes, some people do experience a halo effect around lights at night, however I did not have this problem. The first couple of nights there was a small glow around lights at night but it went away.

The majority of the complications occured in the beginning during PRK surgery, now Lasik is the preferred method....There is a new method called Wave Front technology which I am not familiar with but I will give you a breakdown of the aforementioned two.

PRK- This was the first method used, essentially it involved a laser removing a small amount of your cornea and then treating the area accordingly and then you were on your own to heal naturally (with the help of medication of course"

Lasik- This method involves the laser cutting a small flap in the cornea which is layed open, the laser then treats the area and the flap is placed back where it was. This method is much less invasive and much less prone to complications. You are prescribed medications with this method as well and encouraged to wear the 85 year-old grandpa sunshades for a week or so to let your eyes acclimate to the sun.

If you follow the guidelines for post operative care well there should be virtually no complications...like usual, it's the people who abuse their body after surgery that run the risk of injury....and they are always the most vocal ones when it comes to the "My Doctor butchered me" speech.

As you can tell I did a lot of research before I took the plunge which I suggest everyone do beforehand. In case anyone was curious my surgeon was Dr. Avi Wallerstein out of LasikMD in Mississauga..they also have offices in Niagara Falls and Ottawa.

Happy vision...Goulet!!!!
I wear contacts and prefer them by far over my glasses. The only times I've been terribly pissed with my contact is whenever I'm in Chicago. Something about the summertime climate there just gums them up and drives me insane.

I looked into the laser eye surgery but based on the shape of my eyes I would have had to do the "more expensive, more painful, longer recovery" version. Ummm, way to sell me guys! I passed.
COntacts are sweet, I work outdoors a lot in the heat of the summer and it's a big relief to not have glasses falling off my sweaty nose every time I turn or bend...it just feels a lot less "cumbersome". Plus I find I see better with contacts, all around. I never even had trouble putting them on my eye the first time, after two seconds of confusion about how to put them in right I was sold and never looked back.
