Welp, here I am finshed applying, waiting for responses; trying to figure out where I'm going to go. Thought I'd collect some info.
I'm going for Social Sciences
The choices are:
McGill (50/50 chance of getting in)
Queens
Carleton
U of Ottawa
U of T
Mac
Western
Guelph
Opinions? Anybody know anything aboout shool spirit at these school? Good time in res? Fun place to be?

All I can say is: put on your old Queen's sweater. The only shitty part about first year here is the food. Our Cafe's suck. But the residences are cool, espeically the newer ones (we call them chalets). So close to the downtown and the action. The Frontinacs could be pretty good next year, and there's always Hip sightings. At the shows, at restaurants, on Princess St, or perhaps eight doors down (I actually lived about that many away from Rob Baker in 2nd and 3rd year).

You have to be kidding me. You are in high school and were so confident with your knowledge of NAFTA. What is exactly your expertise? Plus, you said I needed a textbook. Well here is my tip for you. You will learn alot when you go to university.

lol - Bud, I'm sorry. I do know a thing or two about nafta and its economical impacts, but hey, i'm just a kid so whatever. God damnit i hate typos i've had to edit this a million times. Anyways, your "tip" was more of a statement than advice.

I have 2 concers about queens - but one of them really applies to every ontario univeristy minus carleton and ottawa U - I'd like to keep my french, that is, to be around a french atmosphere.
The second is the elitest rep. the univeristy has...not that I'm against that, it would be cool to be part of it. Any insights into that?

Guelph's been great so far, but really, when it comes to something like Social Sciences, you can't go wrong anywhere. You're going to thoroughly enjoy yourself, wherever you go man....

I went to Queen's for undergrad. As what has been posted before I have to agree, the first year food was brutal.
As for the school having an elistest rep. Yes some people there do carry that. I would just say pick friends that dont carry the stigma with them. It can easily be avoided.
Yeah, I have a number of friends who go to Guelph and most of them love it there. Also you could go to Queen's, if you're looking to raise your levels of conceit

Don't go to Carleton, Ottawa is great, but the school sucks, no school spirit if that is what you are looking for. I'd go to Western for stuff like that.
I went to Uni a long time ago so all that could have changed by now.
I just looked at the U of G website, wow...love the architecture of the buildings and the landscaping. Been around since the late 1800's. Anyway,
I have a friend going there for the Veterinary program, he loves it. :thumb:
Guelph is a great school...great town...tons of girls...when the wind blows the wrong way however it smells like cow manure.
Western is also really good...really nice town...smoking hot girls...but the elitism can be a little much for some...try the linebacker breakfast at Christinas, it's delicious!!
Having spent the last 3 years in Ottawa right beside the University I can say that if it's French you're looking for, this is the school for you, I think that French speaking students outnumber the English ones 2 to 1. The girls are a little mundane (sorry to anyone I've offended, just making a blanket statement based on my comparitive observations) but the bars in the market and around campus make up for that.
I'm not sure about the others.

I totally agree! Great spirit here and tons have incredible girls. There is a lot of elitism but it is easy to avoid. Plus there are tons of bars.
As for the linebacker, thats a sunday tradition!
The residences here are great and the food is really good. (When I was in 1st year we occasionally had Swordfish, Mussels, Veal, Duck, some great steaks).
My only complaint at Western is the high price of food at on campus eateries. However the CLT at The Spoke is legendary!
Ottawa - Pros: good social sciences program
close to downtown
bilingual university
Cons: no school spirit
no campus bar
poor administration
residences crowded
the city sucks (no offense to those who live there)
Carleton -- Pros: nice campus
decent transit service
good campus bar
some school spirit
school is working very hard on improving its quality of education.
Cons: university is not bilingual
campus is pretty far from "the market"
mediocre reputation
mediocre social sciences program (psych is alright though)
the city sucks (no offense)
Pros of both: the universities work together on a lot of programs and share professors, and compete with each other on both athletic and scholastic fronts
Cons of both: cost of living in Ottawa is very high, and non-government jobs don't tend to pay as well as in other cities. The city is very apathetic about everything.... so it's tough to blame the universities for having low spirit. For example - the hip show in Ottawa was not quite sold out, and many people off to the sides and far back spent most of the concert sitting, and golf-clapping when appropriate, rather than standing, cheering, or singing along, as was the custom at every other hip show I've seen.
All that being said, I'm a pessimist. If you choose to go to either Ottawa school, let me know and I'll give you the low-down on where to party/work/live/eat, etc.
argh thanks for the info and opinions guys. This is going to be a tough call. Any more opinions and advice would be great..
