Chagrin, like A Beautiful Thing, is another one of those coat-tails riders, coming before Escape and Penguin. I'd rather ride around to the other side of the moon with:

On my way home last night, I tested out my triple play by popping in DFN and firing up Nautical; I've decided that DFN is a Tragically Hip Fourteen-ple Play.

Notice a lot of combos from DFN in this thread... especially from the first half of the disc. My opinion is, although the topic is for only three-song lists, the first seven songs on DFN (Grace, DD, Greasy, Yawning, Fire, So Hard Done By and Nautical) are the Hip at their absolute peak... while they've come close in later discs, they've never equaled the heights of those super seven.
Anyone care to debate this?

I love most of their stuff but I agree that DFN was their "Ok Computer" or their "Sgt Peppers". DFN is the Hip at their absolute best. To me anyway, that record is so distinctively Hip and I can't really compare it to any other music of the mid nineties. The first seven songs are all masterful pieces. Nautical, although basic and fairly easy music to play is just music for music lovers! I heard Neil Young say that the basic, easy songs to play are actually the most difficult to get to sound good. I think he was talking about the Stones and how some people didn't think they were the greatest musicians but the songs are great. To be able to write a simple song with simple chord structure and make it sound "right" is indeed a challenge and Nautical proves this point. DFN to me should be ranked up their with the best albums to come out of Canada. Dave Bidini was asked if he thought the Hip were just another bar rock band in the early nineties and Bidini said he agreed with that statement. BUT BUT BUT then Bidini said "then I heard DFN!" That's when Bidini knew the Hip weren't just another bar band, but they had depth and soul and passion and creativity and uniqueness. Long live DFN as one of Canada's best albums!
Agreed, DFN is their classic album. However, I've always thought that the final 7 songs stand up with the first 7 very well. I've always been a fan of the way that album ends. (Not to take anything away from the start, which of course, is nothing short of brilliant).
Good point, I've always had a thing for the ends of their albums too...
I'd love to read how the order of songs are created. What is the thought process, if there is one, or is it as simply random or what sounds good. To me, the Hip are amazing because of their album continuity...there are not a lot of bands that have produced albums that I can honestly play front to back in completion.

I certainly don't mean to imply that the second half of DFN is chopped liver... far from it. Some great songs there, and Titanic is one of my all-time faves. But I've always thought the first half was just a little better overall than the second half. Thugs always felt like a "breather" song to me... because I needed to recover from the sustained brilliance of the seven songs that came before it! I'm sure some of you will be shocked (SHOCKED!) that I think of Thugs that way, but that's OK, I can take the heat! :wink:

for another Hip-trifecta, I'm gonna try out Bones/Twist/Cordelia on my way home tonight. Also on that album is the fantastic combo of Pistols/Fight/Verge, which would only be better if it was Verge/Fight/Pistols, but oh well.
