howdy folks...just wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for a dvd writer to buy, i have been looking at the HP DVD630I...also does anyone know how complicated it is to install your own

I got the Pioneer DVR-108. It's sweet, and also got a lot of godo reviews. It's also now under $100

whats the point of a dual layer dvd burner when you cant get dual layer rw disks?
i was told that the reason why copied dvds dont look the exact same as originals is because the original is dual layered and rw's are not. Also what the difference between -R and +R. thanks

to answer my own question.. yes there are dual layered discs but they are expensive as hell. has anyone used one yet?

DVD+R
A new single-write format, based on DVD+RW technology
Offers a defect management system

DVD-RW
Allows you to write, erase and re-write on the same disc up to 1,000 times
Before re-writing you must first erase the entire disc

Where is the best place to buy one in terms of selection and cost? future shop? radio shack? Jim-bob's DVD store?

Most likely from a reputable local computer store or online. pccanada.com is in Toronto and usually have good prices and selection. I've ordered from them and had no prob. Ncix.com is another good place, based in Vancouver and do a lot of online stuff.

Check out the yellow pages for your area (Hamilton) and look under computers and try giving a few places a call or visiting their websites if they list them. Call or email and ask for prices. They can vary from store to store.

I would recommend buying the BenQ 1620, it's a fast (16x) burner, and I never have a problem with it, but if you do, stick to the better brands of media, it doesn't like the cheapies... Tiger Direct is where I bought my burner recently for a super good price. I got the Sony DRU-710A and it is awesome so far!
