It's a new band. Interesting sound. Not sure if I like them yet. It's the name that caught me by surprise. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of 20th century history knows that Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria-Hungary and heir to its throne. He was assassinated on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo. The aftermath of this spark led to World War I. I do not like the name. Here's why. Generally speaking, their audience will be early and mid-teenage kids. Who will get the reference? It's not a particularly clever name. There's no real significance in it. What are they trying to achieve or prove? Other than they know a little something about The War To End All Wars. The real question is, can we form a rival band named Gavrilo Princip?
I've had the CD since May and I like about half of the stuff on it.
As for your issue with the band's name, I doubt they are trying to achieve or prove nothing with it (much like I doubt the Hip were trying to achieve or prove anything with "The Tragically Hip"). Its prolly just a name they liked. Hell, who doesn't like saying "Franz". I think that's what I'll start calling Jagr the next time I see him loaf. "What a Franz".
I caught on to Franz Ferdinand back in February or March...like you, it was the name that got my attention in a Mojo Magazine article. Bought their self-titled album, and love it. I've seen their last 2 gigs here in Toronto (the Kool Haus & the Dock's shows). Great stage presence, great sound. The audience at the Kool Haus was much better (19+ only) than the Docks, and a better venue to boot.
If you're interested, you should try & download their glastonbury 2003 performance. An excellent taste of their live look & sound.........
Cheers! :thumb:
I wouldn't go asd far as saying Franz is a NEW band...I've been hearing about their hype for a couple of years now.
Check out them playing on "Later w/ Jools Holland" if you can, too.

Yeah not really new but good stuff. I love Modest Mouse also. Again not new but still really good.

I echo your sentiments... both these bands are really good. "Take Me Out" is one of the catchiest tunes around, which is good because it's such a great song. Try NOT dancing to it! As for Modest Mouse, "Float On" was a good first single, but I really dig "Ocean Breathes Salty".
I didn't get any CDs or gift certificates for Christmas (but I got a lot of other good stuff, so I'm not complaining!

), so I guess I'll have to pony up to get these myself to support these bands.
So who's listening to the new album? I haven't heard it yet, but its due out soon.
Are Franz only getting hyped now across the pond then?
Their debut (self titled) album back in 2004 was very good, I still enjoy it now, but the second album (You Could Have It So Much Better) was quite disappointing, the singles aside... I'm hoping for good things with the new album though, hopefully I'll get my hands ona review copy!
edit: would help if I checked the dates on the posts really, wouldn't it!
Just heard the new single.
My god, these boys know how to right catchy tunes!
