Massey Hall secret show for M@W.
Some good tunes in there that are rare to see...over all the addition of chris and kate and the lack of Grace too and NOIS ruined the show for me.:

That looked like a decent show, I dont see whats so bad about it? You dont hear Flamenco, Dont Wake Daddy or Something On very often. Im sorry this show didnt make it for you, but in all the times Ive seen the band Ive never come away saying "that setlist sucked" or something to that effect. For me they could play Nautical Disaster 20 times in a row and it would still be a good show. Thats just my opinion 8)
That Massey Hall show was awesome! The spontaneous rendition of O' Canada.
I'm with LizardKing51... any Hip show is a great time, regardless of the setlist. Certainly there are some songs I want to hear more than others on certain nights, but it's like choosing which one of your children you love more. (For the record, I don't have any children, but I think the comparison works...)
I believe the point was missed.
All im saying is that out of the 15 odd shows i've been to...this comes last...
Its just an opinion, I was hoping to see other peoples least favorite shows and why...
with the sub idea of, did chris and kate steal the soul from The Hip?
with the answer being, yes...

Fair enough.
I don't remember the setlists well enough to determine which show had the worst setlist, so I'll only comment on the Chris & Kate topic.
I don't think that they stole the soul from The Hip. They were like an alternative girlfriend; a little bit different than what you're used to, perhaps a little out of their element when they are with you, you become richer for having seen them, and after they're gone you don't really miss them, but every now and then, some memory pops into your head as to why you liked them in the first place. That memory for me is of Fully Completely from the ACC when Gord and Kate traded "Fully's" with one another, hers lingering longer in the air, his screamed for all its worth. Just awesome.
(By the way, I saw a funny T-Shirt that said, "Without Me, it's just Aweso!")
To be honest I had to look up the setlist for the massey hall show...but i'll always remember the horrible taste i had in my mouth after that show; I thought the hip would never come back...luckily Chris and Kate left them for 'brighter lights' aka peterbourgh bar shows...
I think chris even screwed the intro to lake fever..cause they had to start it again....
It really just wasnt worth fighting all the homeless people to get tickets for that show...although it will probably be the first ad last time i need to answer a skill testing question to get tickets.....
When I saw the hip with Chris and Kate at the ACC I was realy impressed. Chirs I could go without, but Kate was outstanding. She could have sat back for a couple of tunes, but I will always remember her duet with Gord on Flamenco- Listen to that one (dec. 3 2000).

Is this the greatest-ever post in the entire history of this message board? I'm going to venture a tentative "yes", but I probably haven't been around long enough to have an accurate enough perspective.
As for the issues at hand...
1. I didn't like Chris and Kate, although I didn't dislike them either. They were just sorta...there, y'know, like Boom in Pearl Jam. I don't love Kate's voice, however, so hearing her trade verses with Gord on certain songs ("Flamenco" at the show I attended on the EWTTH) wasn't ideal.
2. I'm a fierce proponent of the "some setlists are better than others" debate--due in large part to being a Pearl Jam fan who has been utterly spoiled for the past few tours (this September, for instance, I saw the band for the eleventh and twelfth time and heard a staggering thirteen songs I'd never heard live before). On one hand...I mean sure, I love seeing the Hip live, and even if they keep recycling their greatest hits I'll still keep seeing shows. On the other, I get frustrated when they don't take more chances with what they play--or, put differently, knowing the chances of me hearing a song like, I dunno, "Yawning or Snarling" is next to none. I'm sure the band knows that they've got a devoted following who see multiple shows each tour; I don't feel as though it's asking too much for them to mix things up a little bit for our benefits. For that reason I'd rate the 11/26/04 Toronto show as the ultimate manifestation of my inner turmoil where setlists are concerned. On one hand, I thought the song selection sucked, even though I respect that it was made with a DVD release in mind. On the other hand, I had a great time--I've heard "MM@W" live ten times and still get this goofy little grin whenever I hear it. Where am I going with all this? I guess, in a sense, that the average Hip setlist is like a long-term significant other: sometimes they're predictable to the point of being boring, but other times they remind you exactly why you fell in love with them in the first place.

well in my opinion i quite enjoyed chris and kate, i've seen the band about 15 times now and some of my favorite versions are the ones where gordie and kate were trading verses back and forth, such as flamenco, or yawning or snarling
i would like to see more of these songs where they traded back and forth, the above mentioned were from the 2 toronto dates of the evening with the hip tour
as for the rotation of songs, the hip is pretty good, maybe not as good as pearl jam ( i own about 15 of the bands "bootlegs")but they still change it up a hell of a lot more than most touring bands around, there are a lot of bands that have the same (exactly the same) setlist for entire tours. one of my favorite things about them is that you have a good idea of what you might hear when you're going to see them but you're always wondering what the "special" (ones that aren't played every night) songs are going to be, at least thats how i feel
if i had to pick a "worst" setlist it would be woodstock, not because of songs but because of length, which i know was not the bands fault by any means, they still rocked for the hour they had or however long it was
Anybody who doesn't like Chris and Kate being added to the tour should listen to Chicago 2000. Chris's organs and keyboards mesh wonderfully with the rock music, and Kate's vocals are soulful and powerful, without overpowering Gord.
I would still love to have a good recording of a show where she sings verses of Yawning or Snarling. I had never heard of her before I saw the Hip show with her in it, and I was blown away when she took over lead vocals during Yawning!! Incidentally if anybody has a great-sounding recording of this, could they possibly PM me?? Pretty please??
I gotta agree with those who enjoyed Chris and Kate for what it was...something different! No, it wasn't the "usual" hip, but they added something different to the mix, and I enjoyed the 3 or 4 shows I saw them play on....though I still prefer the hip without the organ....but I am still glad I got to see it in the first place......
As for the discussion of best/worst setlists, etc....I've been to too many to really have an answer, though Edenfest had a few songs I coulda done without, like Butts Wigglin and Sherpa.....though at the time, I thought the show was amazing.....
One thing I can say though is that the setlists for the most recent Canadian shows have been rather bland...I was at London and Wasaga, and LOVED both shows, though I could've used some more "rare" stuff, especially at Wasaga, though I realize that this was just a warm-up show to practice some of the new tunes.....I dunno, I definately loved every show I've been to, and all I guess I'd like to see are a few more "rares" thrown in, like yawning, penguin, bastard, canuck, etc....
With all due respect to everyone's opinions,
regarding that chicago 2000 show with Chris and Kate, never liked it. Did not like her singing back ups at all. Sorta sounds like my grandma, and really ruins Music@Work. When she sings "Sea full of Ganges" I cannot help but think of that one saturday night live skit with that chick and Will Farrell singing to high school kids about drugs, etc. The organ on the other hand, is okay. Kinda reminds me of chicago stadium in the late 80's, but I could do without it.

I would have to say the version of Flameco with kate is 10 times better with her.
The only show I have ever been to, and walked out dissapointed, was the last show they played in Baltimore.
