Hi guys, I am sorry did not know where to ask this but I thought this is a big enough place somebody might know...

I am trying to install a game on my computer and it seems to install OK, all 1.7 gigs of it, but it won't fire up. When I click the application icon i get an error saying: "D3DERR_INVALIDCALL / Code: 2156, facility: 2166, severity: 1".

How do I know if this is a software problem or soemthing wrong with my computer? And does anybody know how to fix it?? Very much hoping somebody can help or maybe somebody knows a great tech forum I can ask in...thanks!!
If you go HERE, you'll see the Google results for a web-search for the error message you received.

If you go HERE, you'll see the Google results for a newsgroup search for the error message.

I don't play games on my PC but from the two minutes I spent looking at the above information, it sounds like you have a problem with Direct X drivers or your Video Card. You should also try Microsoft's support pages.

Please be prepared to receive any Tool Points you may be administered for this thread.

LOL... +5 Tool points to you!

...yeah, I know, i'm a loser.

Anyway, yup, sounds like a directX problem. In addition to googling like Scott mentioned, check out the game's website support pages, they might have a patch for the game... or look up your video card manufacturer's website, they might have something documented about issues with your particular game and you need to upgrade your video card drivers. But more than likely since it's a direct3d error, if you install the newest version of direct x (I think it's v. 9c now) then you'll solve the problem.
Make sure you are using the most up-to-date drivers for your video card. Also make sure your computer is up to date operation system wise too by doing a windows update from your start menu.

I should have been more specific, sorry, I tried searching for "D3DERR_INVALIDCALL" and I got a link to this Microsoft page: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/directx9_c/directx/graphics/reference/d3d/constants/D3DERR.asp">http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/defau ... D3DERR.asp</a><!-- m -->

So I followed a link to: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77">http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77</a><!-- m --> which was supposed to update my video card or something, and I rebooted but it still won't work.

I really did try to sort this out on my own, I just thought since my search didn't help me, even after using the 2nd link to download something, I thought somebody in a place this big might know exactly what to do rather than suggest searches. (Not that I dont appreciate the effort! ! ! ! My fault for not posting my search results in the first post. Sad
No need to apologize Go®d, especially now that I see your avatar has Byers in it. (Yes, I was (still am) an uncontrollably HUGE X-Files fan)

About updating your video card drivers... did you remove all of the old stuff first and then install the new one, or did you just install overtop of the other files? If you didn't uninstall the old drivers then that could be part of your problem. Try running the Windows Update like Highlander said also, it should throw in the latest directX drivers too.

Good luck....

ps. mind if I ask what game you're trying to install?
