got this idea in the john lennon thread, and let's face it..there are some really crappy versions of songs we love by the original, but despise by whoever decides to butcher it.however, there have been a few exceptions..the neil young version of imagine i mentioned in that thread, the beatles doing twist and shout..(let's face it.they made it their own)..and a live version of new orleans i saw the stereophonics do in vancouver one year..it blew me away!!!
anybody have any others?
Just saw a great version of "come together" last night performed by the Waking Eyes. Really rockin version of it.

Other covers I like are "pocahontas" - Crash Vegas
"I'm a ram" - Big Sugar and Gov't Mule
"Sweet Jane" - Cowboy Junkies
"Gin and Juice" - The Gourds?
that's all I can think of at the moment. Drawing a blank
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Chantal K - Leaving on a Jet Plane
The Hip - Black Day in July
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World
i dig the tea party version of paint it black
AC/DC's version of "Baby, Please Don't Go".

Yes, good choice.

Another good cover is CCR's version of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine".
Off the top of my head...

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Call Me the Breeze
Black Crowes - Hard to Handle
Allman Brothers - Statesboro Blues
Carbon Leaf did a spectacular version of Minutes to Memories, they have also done covers of Time and Come Together. Check out their web site to download them :thumb:
I was just thinking of this topic the other day while listening to CCR's version of Grapevine on the radio, some great picks already, especially "Sweet Jane", "All Along The Watchtower" and "Grapevine". I'll add a few..

Streetheart - Under My Thumb
Frigid Pink - House of The Rising Sun
Guns N Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door
our lady peace version of the needle and the damage done is great
a band called badlands does a mean version of fire and rain, ( james taylor)
bruce bickinson all the young dudes, manic street preachers, suicide is painless ( theme from mash) oasis - cum on fell the noise

Jimi Hendrix did several amazing covers. Hey Joe, Johnny B. Goode, Killing Floor. Back then people recorded more covers, it seems.

For some very cool Dylan covers, check out the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack. The Dead's Baby Blue is better than the original, the Mangokoro Brothers's My Back Pages (in Japanese) is fantastic, and there's a good rendition of Most of the Time by somebody or other.

But pleeeeez nobody tell me the G&R Heaven's Door was good. That was one of the lousiest Dylan covers I can remember -- Slash is good but Axl Rose was completely over the top. And I have to say this is the worst Dylan tune to cover -- it's the one twits like Avril Lavigne choose because it's classic Dylan without political implications or sentimental overtones, so you get the street cred of covering Dylan without risk.
cowboy junkies - sweet jane
tori amos - love song/ i don't like mondays
snake river conspiracy - how soon is now?
siouxsie and the banshees - the passenger
cat power - i found a reason
emilliana torrini - the sound of silence

good thread :thumb:
Yeah, cool thread opiated... I was thinking of starting a thread on this, but you obviously beat me to it.

Anyway, my favourite cover is Social Distortion's version of Under My Thumb... I love how they re-worked it into a classic hardcore punk song. Absolutely kicks ass! :thumb:

I also like Foo Fighters doing Baker Street, The Ataris version of The Boys of Summer (changing the line "Deadhead sticker" to "Black Flag sticker" is a nice touch) and of course The Hip's version of Black Day in July.

Oh... and Korn's cover of Word Up is also good for sh*ts and giggles.
Great pics so far everyone, named most of my faves..

Black day in july-The hip
Paint it black-Tea Party
Johnny cash-hurt
Whiskey in the jar-Metallica (amazing..just..amazing)
