I have an idea: with the help of the members here, I want to compile a list of all the known songs that the Tragically Hip (or Gord Downie) have covered, or all the Hip songs that have been covered by others.
here's a few off the top of my head:
- Suzie Q (CCR cover)
- Black Day in July (G. Lightfoot cover)
- When you dance I can really love (Neil Young cover/Gord solo live)
- Take me in your hand (Rheostatics cover live w./Ron Sexsmith)
- The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (G. Lightfoot cover)
- Summer Side of Life (G. Lightfoot cover)
- Fortunate son (CCR cover/G. Downie solo live MMM I&I)
- The Man Comes Around (Johnny Cash cover/ G. Downie solo live)
- 2000 lightyears from home (Rolling Stones cover)
- Train Kept'a Rollin' (Aerosmith cover)
so far, the only Tragically Hip song I have heard covered by another band is the 'Fiddler's Green' by the Stereophonics.

I've heard them do "I'll Make Love to You" by J.J. Cale and I heard from a couple of sources that they used to do a mean version of "Stepping Stone" by the Monkees.

Suzie Q isn't actually a CCR tune. They also covered it. I believe it was originally recorded by Dale Hawkins in the 1950's. I think Train Kept Rollin' was also a cover, the oldest cover version I know of was done by the Yardbirds. Not sure who did it originally. Anybody know?

I think it's during the Gloria cover they tease, Doors- changling, Zep's How Many More Times
Downie has done several Dylan covers solo: "Going, Going, Gone," "On a Night Like This," "If You Gotta Go, Go Now," and "Nobody 'Cept You." I think he did a good job on these; his ragged delivery works well for Dylan songs.
Also the Hip covered Dylan's "Seven Days."
Downie's other solo covers include "Roll Another Number," "Tonight's the Night" and "Barstool Blues" by Neil Young, "I Wants to be Loved" by Muddy Waters, "I Can Only Give You Everything" (the Troggs?), and "Memo to my Son" by Randy Newman.

Train Kept a-Rollin' is much older than that. I heard an early R&B version a couple of days ago but I don't know what band it was. allmusic.com says it was written in 1951 by one Tiny Bradshaw.

i'm sure you could get all the info you're looking for at the unreleased hip song website... it's a fan site that they used to have linked from their discography page... i can't remember the address but i'm sure it won't be hard to find in a search and i'm more sure one of the next 3 replies will have it.

"The Sweet Hereafter" is amazing, as is the importance of the presence and placement of The Hip's original version.
Quite a different spin on it, making it one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard.
