Can anyone tell me what's going on here? This song is a threat for the best on the album as far as I'm concerned, top 3 at least. Yet, the Hip have maybe played it once or twice in the last 2-3 weeks? I haven't seen it on many setlists for a while now.
I just find it hard to believe, cause it's such a solid song! I was a tad disappointed when it wasn't played at the ACC, but you can't hear everything. Anyone else feel this way? Or am I one in the minority of people who think this song rocks?!
I love Josephine..but as with every show, they need to switch things up. You'll have to ask Sinclair.
This has been
discussed previously and like with almost every other song, opinions vary.
I see it as one of those "sleeper" tunes that's easily dismissed the first few times you hear it; the melody's too pretty, the imagery isn't as dark and moody as the 'hits', too many 'la-la-la-las', etc. Eventually the listener realizes that it's a strong, nearly perfect song. Played live, it's freakin' amazing and whether you're at the show or hear a fan-recording later, the realization hits you and you wonder why you dismissed it so easily.
I think a lot of it has to do with your state of mind at the time. From the very first time I played IBE, Family and Josephine blew me away. I was emailing my daughter who I don't see as often as I'd like 'cause she lives several states away and we're both busy with work and school, respectively. The tone of Family was appropos to the moment, provoking reflection on the last time we saw each other several months earlier. When Josephine started, the first line touched me deeply; one of the last pictures I took of her was a candid shot while she was standing outside a restaurant...talking on her cell phone.
I will forever relate the song and that one random moment, captured on a whim.
It's on a few of the fan recordings made early on and each one is powerful. I hope they bring it back into the mix so anyone who hasn't experienced "live Joe" gets the chance.

i totally agree amazing song i heard it live in toronto at the amphitheatre and it didn't stand out to me but then i got listening to it on the livedownloads cd i made and it really grew on me now i would put it in my top 3 songs on the album also i was suprised to see that summer's killing us was so low on the fave poll i love that song
A while ago (pre-IBE release), I sat down and burned me a two-volume CD compilation called "About a Girl/Just a Girl" that was filled with songs with women's names in the titles ... Evelyn was my Tragically Hip selection.
If I coulda just held out for Josephine. Geez. Goodnight Josephine is the best song on IBE bar none. And it should be released as a single and become the best song in the history of the world.
