Man, I can't get over how great It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken sounds live. It sounded great when I downloaded the Canada Day show from livedownloads.com, and I was hoping they'd play it again in Toronto. Well they did, and it blew me away again!

The album version is good, but live it just sounds so powerful, so full of emotion... just knocks me on my ass!

What do you all think???
I think you're right. CD version is good, live version is infreakincredible. Then again, I'm not one who thinks IVL is a weak album. Response to this question will vary greatly, so be prepared.

Thats amazing! I just said the exact same thing to a friend yesterday.
Great song live, especially the Canada Day show from livedownloads, I listen to it all the time, mostly to hear that song. :thumb:
That is one of my favourites.... When they played it at the Hummingbird Centre in 2002 it actually brought a tear to my eye.
I'll throw my support behind that statement as well. I feel that it get's way too much critisism, so it's nice to have a positive thread about IAGLIYDW being played.
I don't hate Good Life ... but I wish it had two verses instead of one verse twice.*

I'll grant that it's "different" live, but I'd rather hear about 6 or 7 other songs off IVL.

I can't get enough of it live. A fun game to play is trying to see if you can hold onto the Growwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and Gooooooooooooooooo's with Gord without taking a breath. He looks like his face is about to explode: Breath Man!

Yeah, sort of like 50 Mission Cap.
I respectfully put my vote in the "Nay" column, though I'm basing that mostly on the Live Downloads Toronto recording. It's such a change of pace on that particular recording (it's not Gord's best vocal performance either) that if it doesn't exactly stop the concert in its tracks, it does at least throw it out of gear, IMHO.

Cheers,
John
I'm a huge fan of it. I think I understand all the "it breaks the momentum" thoughts, except I don't see how inserting a ballad in its place would be better...in fact, it would be worse if it's all about momentum. I just think it's one of the boldest songs the band has done and the emotion is so powerful on it. I think my inability to communicate it properly reveals how powerful it is for me, so perhaps I'm not its best defender...
Love the song.

Hate the abbreviation.
i was glad they didn't play it when i saw em this summer, i'd much rather here The Darkest One, unfortunately i haven't yet.
i would like to see a show in which they DIDNT play it... i would much rather hear sherpa or flamenco.. those songs are slow comparision songs which i personally like better
By far it is the best song they've ever written.
Uh-oh...I can see the flurry of activity that's about to begin. In effort to save bandwidth and time, I'll try to cover the next ten posts with this one:

No it isn't...Yes it is...No it isn't...Yes it is...No it isn't...Yes it is...No it isn't...Yes it is...No it isn't...Yes it is...

Phew! Saved a lot of space and we can move on unencumbered.
