Yeah, I wasn't even going to post any of it until I read that in one of the appendix's at the end of the book. It was a real "Well, holy shit... that's the coolest thing ever!" moment. I was actually anxious to get home and write it down (Which I guess explains the mucho grammar and spelling errors in the first post!

Some of the exact quotes: (They're from recorded interviews, so they read rather "rambling")
"...About four or five hours afterwards he came back in and warmed up. After being in a few minutes he produced his boards... "Oh," I said, "It would make you freeze to look at it." Again, that rare smile appeared on Thompson's face...
"...They're (The Northern Lights) brilliant tonight Tom," and he'd warm his hands and go out and stand there and I kept the fire roaring good and Tom would come in and warm his hands again - it was far below zero - and he go out and just gaze at them again. Finally, about 11:30 he remarked, "I can't believe I got them on canvas..."
... So many of his paintings were done by lamplight, he'd be all night in the cold. Most of it, hours outdoors. How he did it, nobody knows but Tom Thompson..."
P.S. I'm telling ya folks, if we put this kinda junk together with some personal road stories and some of the cool stuff Chris has got going-down on his memorabillia site, we'd have quite a nifty fan book. Just need to convince a publisher...
If any of you ever get the chance to visit Canoe Lake, I suggest it. I have also been to Tom Thompson lake just north of Canoe Lake. It's quite a place, if I had any artistic ability, I'd still be there !

As a side note to the drowning thing, from reading the book 'The Perfect Storm' (the one adapted into the movie), you CAN drown without water in your lungs. Apparently, some people have a reaction that shuts the flap that is in your throat where it divides to the lungs and the stomach. This can save you (you can theoretically stay submerged for longer and not die), but it's also apparently hard to reverse, which means it can also kill.
That doesn't mean I'm refuting the murder theory, but just adding a tidbit of info.
And Algonquin Park is one of the most beautiful places in Ontario. I was working at a camp there in the spring (first time to the park) and I've fallen in love with the place, I can't wait to go back.
Sorry - maybe I missed this: is the book actually called "The Tom Thompson Mystery" by William T. Little? I haven't been able to find it on Chapters or Amazon's website and I am intrigued now

I'm a publisher and would be happy to help the community put together a fan book. First off, I know how to see this project through to the end -- I've printed many quality perfect bound books in my days -- saw them right through production, layout, et al. et al.
Of course, I couldn't front any money for it. But:
We could get the book digitally ready for printing. A print run of 500 softcover perfect bound books with a color cover would be around 2200 bux Canadian. Pictures would be black and white -- no color inside. That would up the price considerably.
So sell 220 at 10 bux a pop and we'd recover our costs in advance of printing (print run takes two weeks at the printer). We sell the rest with all or some of the proceeds going to Waterkeepers and some cash to Lance to keep his server running.
So we'd need to sell 220 in advance -- think we could do it? I'd be willing to donate time and energy and lots of knowledge both hip wise and publishing industry wise. Waterkeepers would get a couple of grand out of the deal, too.
Be easy to get reviews in the paper, too, I'd imagine -- so the books would sell themselves.
