Well...I just found this amusing, I'm not complaining I wouldn't have changed thursday night for anything!! This is just amusing!
When I gave Gord the book thursday I had a short letter in it about how "It's a Good Life..." meant so much to me as did the whole IVL album because it helped me through a recent terrible time in my life.
So, if you look at the last four set lists on the official site. They played "It's a Good Life..." in Burlington the night before the show. They didn't play it at the show, and they've played it every night since!

I sympathize with ya! I seen quite a few people raggin on that song in here. I think "Good Life" is one of the coolest songs in their catalog. It's one of the few that I could stand it if they played it every show. Its amuzing how bent we get over this bands set lists! Myself included. I'm headed to the Toledo show (seen the Detroit show) this friday and would love for the band to "dig deep" into the catalog. but on the other hand I'm bringing two guys with me who basically know the hits...so... I'm just happy these guys still tour and do their thing!
Good Life is a great tune...on the album. I don't think it gets its due live for The Hip, which is rare. I've heard it live on both the IVL and IBE tour and it didn't impress me either time. Oh well, I'm not complaining - still love the shows. Looking forward to Nov 26 at the ACC!

I'm always amazed at the sheer, unrelenting emotion Gord forces from himself on stage during that song. He holds and grinds that "Grooooow" to the point where the veins in his head are ready to burst. He has to take a DEEP breath, step back and regroup after each chorus... and when he does that,a slight smile usually breaks over his lips.
I love "Good Life" live, and on the album. As far as setlist pickyness goes, count me among those who be happy to see them play "Mmmmm Bop" all night.
I'm there to see Them, wait they play is a bonus.
I don't think you have seen anyone complain about it's a good life. What bothers me about the setlist is the usuals. If I was playing in front of 500-1000 people a night I would have no problem trying out songs that are, let's say, less usual.
i think the canadian tour will be one that we'll be talking about for years to come..in a positive way....i have a feeling..and really..what's the use about complaining about shows we weren't even at??

Let me be the first on record to complain about the Canadian tour. (If) the setlists are changed more and include deeper cuts, I will be pissed, since I got the same 'crappy' setlist 'every' show down here. :roll:

Just be thankful you're not a Rush fan (if you aren't). They played the same setlist EVERY show on the 30th anniv. tour.
You'll never hear me complain about the setlists. Ever. I am just excited to be fortunate enough to go to the show. Yeah, maybe some lists are repetative, but I go to the shows and enjoy myself. I don't care that I've heard NOIS 30 times! Its different every time! Would I like to hear some old gems? Sure, it'd be great to hear the Luxury, Last American Exit, or SHDB-fast version...the list goes on and on. My list is probably way off from yours. The reality is that we are all different, different tastes, different dislikes, etc... Just be happy that they are still rockin' out after almost 20 years! :thumb:
I'm sure the boys rehearse what the are going to do. Could you imagine putting together a completely unique setlist for every show? I could not imagine the work involved. Even the few gems they have worked in for this tour must have been very laborious.

Just for the record, I've never complained about the setlists as a whole. 100% of the time I'm just excited to be there. My only beef is with certain songs, specifically NOIS. I haven't had the luxury of seeing them a bunch of times this year, but the two times I did see them the band just seemed to be going through the motions on this song. No energy whatsoever. kind of like they wanted to get it over with and move on to the next tune, and I don't blame them.
The song used to be a major highlight of each show because something interesting or unusual was always brewing in the middle of it...whether it be the skeleton of a new song, or Gord improvising a poem or a story. As Gord once said, it was a workshop where anything could happen. But those days seem to be over and it saddens me a bit. NOIS seems to have been permanently replaced by Meridian as the requisite "workshop" song, which is good news for us because at least we know we're gonna get something different each time they play it. I know that there are a lot of folks on here who have met the band numerous times on this tour. Has anybody asked any of the guys why they don't jam out the middle section of NOIS anymore? I'm really curious to know.
Other songs that need a rest:
Fireworks, Gift Shop, My Music at Work, Courage.
On a related note, I have a Pearl Jam bootleg from 2003 where Eddie accidentally screws up the lyrics to Even Flow, and then you can clearly hear him say "I never want to play this f**king song again." It's hilarious.

While I fully respect opinions on setlists and overplayed songs, not all TH fans are fortunate enough to attend endless shows. I myself first saw the Hip in 1995, and a few times since then. I love everything about them, but sadly my schedule and budget have not allowed me to go to all of their shows. Quite frankly,they could sing Jingle Bells all night and I would be happy just to be in their presence. Of course, if you attend every show, you are going to hear songs repeated. They are playing for the masses, not the select few who get to see them repeatedly.

Gord has said (ranted) several times that in order for a show to be great, something has to happen...for a show to be really great, something has to happen...
Back in the day, it always happened during NOIS, to the point that all of us came to expect it. Now it "happens" at other times, like the almost speedmetal action we sometimes hear in the middle of "Meridian".
I'd much rather see (what many of you hear as) a subdued vesion of NOIS and be caught off-guard by an unexpected twist or midsong tempo change in some other tune that may not have stood out belore.
I'm a fan because they keep me guessing and I never know what to expect, not because they play every song the way I think want to hear it.
As a result, everytime I go to a Hip show, something happens, whether anyone else notices it or not.
Oh, and "Good Life" is FREAKIN' AWESOME live!
I for one do complain about the setlists and I have thought long and hard about why I complain and why it makes me upset.
For me, I have seen all I ever wanted to see and done all I ever wanted to do as far as the Tragically Hip is concerned. I have seen 15 shows, met the band on two occasions, got Johnny's drumsticks, and went on a Hip road Trip Twice (one more coming up in November). I have seen the songs I wanted to see (Nautical, Escape, Bobcaygeon, 50MC, Josephine), and been in attendance at some great shows in great seats (Front row at 4 shows).
Now, I am relaxed about the band, appreciate everything I have been able to see and do and feel luck to have had the experiences I have had.
But all I can hope for now is a moment you'd never expect, a glimpse of something I can not compare to another concert I have been in attendance for. My dream instances would be Montreal, or Get Back Again, but I would settle for Highway Girl, Leave or Blonde Solid. I have seen and heard Courage, 100th meridian, NOIS and Blow at High Dough enough times, and they have lost something in the process. I find myself skipping them on bootlegs and I never thought that would happen.
I love this band, but I will not apologize for disliking generic setlists. The band knows about people like us, and they know we are the backbone of their success with every album. I don't feel like they owe us, but it would be nice if they tried to reward our persistent patronage with a moment in every show, even if it means one different song in the setlist that they haven't played for a very long time.
The truth is this has happened for me with another band; Sam Roberts. I have seen the band 9 times, which is a lot out here in the west. With every show I see the same setlist, and hope to hear a new tune or even a different cover.
I think this is human nature to want more, and when I have spent thousands of dollars on this band, I don't think I should have to apologize for wanting something different. I too would go and watch them play Coconut Cream 22 times in a row for $50 a ticket, I love this band.
I want to give one example of what I would like to see from the Hip. Two years ago I saw Dave Matthews Band at GM Place in Vancouver and they played a decent setlist, but no #41, Watchtower or Crush. I went one year later on exactly the same day and they played a setlist with only 2 or 3 repeats from the year before. The band looked at the setlist and decided to play the songs that they didn't play the year before. Why? Because they were thinking of the die hard fans that come to every show as well as the ones that come every year in their town and gave them something different.
That's all I ask from the Hip

Nope, I agree. People have called me cynical, but I think it's just realistic. For the same reason I do not listen to, or care about collecting, bootlegs of really shitty quality. For me, being so familiar with a band, I expect something more. On the Evening With tour, we sure got more than we expected. I did, anyway, it was incredible. But the last show I saw, although it was indeed energetic, had a boring setlist. I found myself paying more attention to taking photos, looking for great lighting moments, great poses from Gord, than the music itself. When I got home I literally could not remember half the setlist. I'm paying fifty bucks to see them in Halifax in a month's time, but the fact that have not seen them on this tour yet will probably leave me impressed with the new songs. However, I agree, if I were to see them four times on one tour, I'd want each show to be distinct.
As long as that distinct show doesn't happen in Sydney - I had to bail because I can't afford the trip. If they play Montreal there, I'll shoot one of them. :lol:
The only, ONLY thing I could possibly complain about the Hip in concert is that they dont do enough for themselves. They're too busy trying to please their minions of fans. I think that if they just did what they wanted to do, it'd be a whole lot more interesting. They'd actually JAM, play far out and rare tunes, and just have a blast.
They're such nice, real guys that they try almost too much to please their general demographic, which is high;y commendable, but is kinda detrimental to their spontaneity, creativity, etc.
I think that if they maybe just did what they wanted to do a little more, it would be more interesting for themselves, and in the process people would pick up on this, and it would actually increase everyones level of enjoyment.
Theres nothing I look for more in watching artists perform than that level of intensity and passion within them, and also just knowing that they are genuinely haveing an awesome time.
