Wasn't sure if I should ask this here or in the Non Hip baord, but it is in regards to going down to see the hip...........

I was just curious about crossing the border from Canada into the States. There has always been rumors, especially after 9/11, that they were going to start asking for Passports to get across the border. I find this really hard to believe and have never been asked myself.

I was just curoius if anyone out there has ever been asked or denied entrance if you didn't have a passport??
Nah, you should be alright.
Going to the Detroit show, I had my passport but the guy with me had only his driver's licence, and they let us across no problem.

Mind you, I'd be inclined to have actual proof of citizenship rather than a driver's licence. I was surprised they let him through.
Just bring your liscence and another peice of id like your birth certificate, and hide your weed in a good place Tongue tips tips

For the last three months, the regulation has been that you're supposed to show either a birth certificate or a passport.

Sounds like they've gotten pretty lax. However, there are extra precautions being taken down here.

If you're coming to the Clifton Park show or at any time to Albany or to the western part of the state, there are border checkpoints down here, 100 miles south of the border in the middle of the interstate and sometimes they do the side roads, like when the PHISH show was in Vermont. So, like hide your pot till you get to your destination
I have been driving back and forth to Rochester from London On for the past 2 years and never had a problem. I always had my passport in the car just in case, but I never had to show it. As long as you have a photo ID (license) and your birth certificate (just in case they want proof of citizenship) you will be fine.
I don't know if this is still applicable but there has been some labour unrest at the border (I think its the Canadian border cops on strike), which is making crossing the border a nightmare. I would leave WAY earlier if trying to get over for a show in NY state...
When we went down for the Spokane show they only asked to see our regular ID (drivers licence). Strangely enough, they didn't ask us where we were going or even how long we would be in the country. The simply said "have a good trip" and that was it. It was weird.

Going into the US isn't the problem, it's coming back into Canada. The picketing is crazy sometimes at the borders in Buffalo/Niagara. However, that late at night, I doubt you'll find many if any picketers.

As for the ID you require, a Canadian entering the US never needs a passport. Just a valid driver's license, and PERHAPS your birth certificate if there is an issue.

Have fun tonight. I have tix to go, but am just feeling too under the weather to make the hour drive.
They let my friends and I across without our birth certificates, but they made a huge fuss about it. So bring it just in case. We had liscences and birth certificates on the second trip and had no problems.
I was not a canadian so I had to fill out a form and pay $6 for processing.

They also wanted to see my tickets for the Portland, Seattle and Spokane show.

Just a little delay, but if you are honest and open, they are usually ok.

If they start to grab for the rubber gloves, get worried Sad
Be friendly, say "Hey" when you pull up and you'll have no trouble. On my trip to Chicago in '02, and on my NYE trip to Buffalo last year, BOTH border guards were Hip fans... we should have a secret handshake or something.

You'll have no problem at the border, don't worry about it.
I always have my licence and birth certificate just in case. Never had to use anything other than my licence though. Just be pleasant with the guard.
Crossing the border is like getting soup from the soup nazi.
