Ontario had now banned pitbulls. No more new ones that is. Pitbulls that are alive will need to have a muzzle on, and be spayed or neutered, also they must always be on a leash must.

Now, they can't say anything about them being on private property, where most of these attacks are happening, so why even bother?

So, what do you think?
Pitbulls scare the sh*t out of me.
Ban them. I know the news is publishing a lot of bad press about them but they are a dog breed for a specific purpose. To protect, kill and mame. Nice pet huh?

I love all animals but these dogs don't have a place in public society.

True. What about those people though that raise their dogs to be good, and friendly..and they never attack anyone? It's just sad knowing that nice people have nice pitbulls..and they have to suffer because of those that choose to raise them to be agressive, which is intimidating to people, because they want to talk s***, and act all tough, just because they know that the dog will protect them no matter what.
Problem is, I've never met a pit bull owner who didn't feel that his pet was wonderful, loving, etc. And every time they hit the news, you hear the owner saying that the dog is normally loving, affectionate, good with kids, and so on.

I'm not sure a ban is the right solution, but it's not entirely true that it's the owners and not the dogs that are the problem.

I've always favored the idea of a separate licensing scheme for problem breeds, one that would require evidence that the dog had been trained by a certified trainer (problem: no such certification exists at present), and that would require the dog's training to be checked periodically by a trainer. That kind of arrangement would allow people to own these dogs, but give reasonable protection to the public.

So then I guess you'd favor extending the ban to Dobies and Rotts, too? I mean, why limit a ban to just one of the breeds developed for the sole purpose of protecting, killing and maiming?

Because only one member of those breeds has been killing and maiming lately. The common law exisits in the now.

If Doberman and Rottweiler attacks get to the levels of PittBull attacks (And in Ontario, the jurisdiction we're discussing, there have been a grand total of Zero Dob or Rott attacks this year) then we'll talk about extending the ban.

The question was should pitt bulls be banned. I gave my answer.
Dobermans and Rottweilers are out of fashion right now, which may account for the lower number of attacks. Pit Bulls are very common.

What breed is Skippy?
Jack Russell Terrier. Can't you tell by the way I nip at everyone's ankles?

I look kinda like this:

but more dog-shaped.
I don't think that banning the breed is the answer. This is not going to stop the people that breed the dogs for fighting or to be viscious. These people will still find ways of breeding the dogs or getting them "underground". Owners should be held more accountable for the actions of their dogs, and there may be less people that raise them improperly.

I don't think that condemning a whole breed because of the actions of some is right. It is like saying (and I may take some shit for this) that some black people are criminals, so they should all be locked up in jail.

I have come in contact with a number of pit bulls and out of all of them, there was only one that was somewhat viscious and that I didn't trust at all... and that was because the dog's owner was a dick and trained his dog to chase down cats, rabbits, etc.

Any dog can be trained to be viscious. Other breeds of dogs bite people, but it is just the pit bull attacks that get widely publicized.

What next? A ban on all large breed dogs? People only allowed to own small dogs like Jack Russels, shitzus, poodles, etc?
Pit bulls scare me too, i wouldnt mind them being banned.

True, there is not a single breed of dog that has not or will not attack a human (Chiuahuas are notoriously agressive). The reason the Pit Bull Terrier is getting singled out is not so much the frequency of attack, but the extent of the damage they cause. Where a German Shepherd may bite and leave a nasty flesh wound, a Pit will bite, lock on (Pit Bull has a “locking” mechanism in its jaw), and shake violently, which, due to their incredible upper body and neck strength, can literally rip a grown man’s arm clean off. Like a select few breeds of dog, a Pit Bull will instinctively continue fight until its victim is dead or incapacitated.

Nevertheless, I have a problem with outright bans. Dogs simply do not attack for no good reason unless they are provoked, or have a history of neglect and maltreatment. I am in regular contact with four different Pit Bull Terriers, and I am not exaggerating when I say they are the sweetest, friendliest, most gentle dogs you’ll ever meet, that is, until you enter their master’s property without the master or around to reassure the dogs that you are not an intruder. In which case, they scare the living shit out of you so you leave, and if you don’t, then they might just maul the crap out of you. But any good watchdog will do this, and is exactly why these people have them in the first place - protection.

I think this issue is just like gun control. In attempt to curb misuse, legislation aims to eliminate the gun itself, and not the irresponsible users, stripping everyone of their right to proper ownership . Not a just solution, IMO.
