I am not one to cause shit on these forums. In fact, I try to avoid friction where I can. However, there is one thing that has been happening quite often on here. It is the insistence that users use the search function to look for pre-discussed topics.
I agree that it can be annoying to read similar or the same information in different threads, and I can certainly understand the band-width limitations. However, I find it 200% more annoying to read the reminders left by others.
Often times these reminders lead to threads which have long-sinced expired. I think it is good to keep different topics going, and to reignite conversations about different topics. Furthermore, there are all kinds of new users coming on, and I think it looks pretty stupid to get on there cases about searching for a thread on a subject before they post.
The Hipbase seems to be one of the last forums on the net where users can have mature and insightful discourse, but I just can't stand the constant reminders to 'search before you post'.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but it would be a lot nicer if you could just search the topic title only.
I searched for like 15 minutes to revive a post that was over 2 months old, because I didn't want to repeat. You can't really blame someone for not wanting to put in that kind of effort to make sure they aren't duplicating a post.

I agree. The "search before you post" police have been getting a bit out of hand lately. If it bothers you that much that someone posts something that has already been discussed in an earlier thread, then don't read it. It's that simple.
I get annoyed with the search police too but I believe it's what Lance wants. I do think it's an attempt to cut down on bandwidth
I actually don't have a problem with the Search Police. I'm thinking about joining;
1) The drug laws enforced by actual policeman don't apply
2) Other laws don't really apply either
3) I can do it from the luxury of my own house
4) I get a cool shiny badge (hopefully)
Now I'll just grow a mustache and I'll be all set.

I agree that the search police are getting annoying, but no one seems to understand how to use it. People are posting new threads, that are nearly identical to threads that are only a few days old, or asking simple questions, that could be answered by searching. My beef is with the latter, more than the former.

A post like this is just lazy, and a waste of bandwidth! Using the search feature would have saved the poster a lot of time and saved other users from witnessing another bust by the search police. (There is a thread called "Fighter Fighter here!" which has links to download the song.)

I think the point here is, you should use the search feature before every post, but if something hasnt been talked about in a really long time, it should be okay to bring it up again, with all the new people that join up, it would be nice to hear some new opinions or ideas. :jump
What's wrong with using the search feature? That's what it's for. There are numerous times when it should have been used because myself and other moderators are seeing lots of repeat topics being posted with the same content. Takes up space and sucks bandwidth. I don't like seeing the HB exceed bandwidth 2-3 days before the end of a month.
There is no official word on this yet but be courteous and do a search before you post something like, "What's the best setlist?" or "Name the top 12 Hip songs". As for those "police" out there, your heart is in the right place but let the moderators take care of it. I don't keep a keen eye on all the postings but when I do find repeat topics or similar discussions I will mention it.

The search feature needs to be fixed. It works terribly. If it worked well, people would be much more inclined to use it.

Basically the reason I ask that moderators take care of it is because if everyone starts policing, it can get out of hand and just puts everyone on edge. I've seen it happen on other forums and groups. Not good. There will be more discussion about this in the future I imagine.

As someone put it quite well earlier, the nature of forums is to be cyclical. I mean, pretty much everything there is to be possibly said about the hip (exempt current events) has been said, so are we to just stop communicating? The place will turn into a library.
The fact is, these forums are meant for discussion and interaction, people just wanna communicate. Theres something peculiarly satisfying about recieving a response to a post of yours, we all know it. I understand the problem, I just think this is what forums are all about, thats all.
I agree with vicariousmartyr. I understand the issues, being predominantly bandwith as it seems, but repeat posts are going to happen, no matter what forum. Sure, all the 'top ten Hip songs' and the 'best album' topics are kinda irritating, but I don't even bother reading them anymore unless there has been at least two pages of replys( and often there is, people just want to discuss). I've been here for more than two years, and I didn't even know there was a search feature until the concept began to be enforced. When I was new here I asked a whole lotta typical dumb questions, and I know if the first response I got was "Use the search feature" I would have just assumed this board was full of unfriendly, bureaucratic snobs, which of course I have come to realize is not even remotely true. As much as I do find the repeated topics annoying, I don't think its fair to lash out at new members of this forum for posting previously discussed topics.
I really do understand where you're coming from, and I agree it's not a horrible, outrageous thing to have duplicate threads. However, when I WAS new here, and whenever I'm new anywhere, I approach the board with the utmost respect for those who have been around a long time. This means I ALWAYS use the search feature before starting EVERY SINGLE thread until I get a feel for the board and learn what has been discussed as I take the time to read older threads over time.
New users should have the common sense and decency to do the same. They cannot reserve the right to be annoyed by our attempts to keep them from duplicating threads because it's foolish and ignorant to come to a board without understanding your newbie status means you might have to put some effort into getting a feel for things. This includes reading older threads, and searching for existing threads. The guy who couldn't find "Fighter Fighter here!!!" probably did not do a search.

Also, I have deleted or merged quite a few topics lately that are started within days of each other. One topic that was started had been done only months before with the
exact same title. There is no harm in adding to a older thread. The new people can see what the older people have written and then the older members can view just the new posts on that thread. I understand not wanting to revive really old threads but when the threads that are being duplicated are less than 6 months old then it becomes a repetative process.
Everyone is obviously welcome to conversation because it would be mighty boring without it but all we are asking is what Highlander stated...just be courteous, think twice before starting a new thread. :thumb:
