I don't see how that translates into someone jumping on the bandwagon..
:?

My point was this - if you live in or around NYC, it makes sense to me that you would be a Yankees fan. If you don't live in or around NYC and you are a Yankees fan, that means you likely started to cheer for them because they have won the most World Series or because they've been the most dominant team in baseball for the past decade (i.e. hopped on the bandwagon).

When I was growing up, I was a fan of the Jays and Expos because I lived halfway between Montreal and Toronto and there was no rivalry between the two. Anyone I knew who cheered for the Yankees did so because they had won the most WS.

I was a fan of the Leafs because I had a preference for the underdog (think mid-80s Leafs owned by that lunatic Ballard) and everyone else cheered for the Habs or Oilers because they were the winning teams.

I'm a fan of the Dallas Cowboys because my old man wanted to make sure I followed the NFL and not the CFL. In the late 70s the only NFL paraphanelia you could purchase in my town was Cowboys stuff, so despite the fact that my old man is a Giants fan (making us bitter enemies two Sundays a year), he bought me Cowboys t-shirts when I was a kid. I guess in that case I can be accused of jumping on the Cowboys bandwagon (afterall, by the end of the 70s the Cowboys were among the most storied NFL franchises), but as a 5 year old I hardly had a say in the matter. :thumb:
cferneyh Wrote:In other words, anyone who cheers for the Yankees and Habs and doesn't live in the vicinity of NYC or Montreal.

Maybe it's a minor point, but that should probably anyone who cheers for the Yankees and Habs and wasn't born in the vicinity of NYC or Montreal. Surely you're not saying that just because you move, you should give up the team you grew up cheering for?

However in general I agree with you about bandwagon fans... they are SO aggravating! :rambo:

Good point, and yes, I meant what you said.

The Darkest Canuck Wrote:what's this bandwagon thing you speak of? please do explain, because i don't quite understand this baseless accusation you've thrown out at me.

Hope this helps you get it:

Meaning of BANDWAGON. Pronunciation: 'band`wagun

Definition: [n] a large ornate wagon for carrying a musical band; "the gaudy bandwagon led the circus parade" [n] a popular trend that attracts growing support; "when they saw how things were going everybody jumped on the bandwagon"

In other words, anyone who cheers for the Yankees and Habs and doesn't live in the vicinity of NYC or Montreal. And anyone who gives up on their team during the tough going and puts their attention elsewhere, kind of like you saying "screw the NFL, c'mon World Juniors" when your Dolphins are the laughingstock of the NFL.

Get it?

I live in Sudbury, we don't have any pro teams you dumb fucking shit. I cheer for the Habs because my Grandfather does (and because they're the best), I have since i could speak. I cheer for the Yankees because my Godfather did (rest his soul) (and because they too are the best in their league) and when i was 6 i got to go to a game at Yankee Stadium with him, and it's one of my dearest memories. so F U C K YOU you fucking wish you knew it all old worthless sac of shit windbag, i'm gonna enjoy my month off, i won't have to deal with your bullshit.

as far as the dolphins go, not a single fucking thing has gone right for them this season, this is the worst team they've ever had and it's been frustrating as hell. of course i'll still watch their game day live scoreboard on NFL.com every Sunday, and watch their little helmet move up and down the field until they lose, it's not very fun, but you never know, they might win, anything can happen in the NFL. they're the only team i've ever cheered for in the NFL, i halfway cheer for the Packers because my girl likes them, and it'd be nice to see at least one of our teams do well.

so, to summarize, take your bandwagon and shove it up your ass motherfucker.

Ten more tool points. Total = 26

Congrats on the free lobotomy!
lol thats funny, tool points coming out

That's what you meant? LOL
It's far from what you said above... Confusedcratch:

But anyways..
A 'bandwagon fan' refers to a fan who is backing a particular team for the simple reason that the team is currently doing well, not for what they did in the past. It's totally different from a fan who has always cheered for a team, whether that team has been successful or not. These latter fans may have begun their love for a team by at one time jumping on a bandwagon, but as time progressed they became an authentic fan of the team, thru thick and thin.

A person's place of residence and their choice of team has no bearing whatsoever on being labelled a 'bandwagon fan'. Bandwagon fans can be found in the city of the team as well. Chances are there are just as many bandwagon Yankee fans who reside in the NYC area as there are anywhere else in North America. Many people don't follow a particular sport in their city unless that city's team is doing well and advancing near a championship. They 'jump on the bandwagon' and start cheering and become a fan of the team. After the season ends, most of these 'fans' stop cheering for the team until such time the next bandwagon passes and they get onboard. They are bandwagon fans in the same manner as other bandwagon fans in other locales who cheer for that team.

Conversely, if a person were born and lived their entire life somewhere other than the NYC area (say Vancouver for instance) and they've been a fan of the Yanks for 50 years, I'd hardly call them a bandwagon fan.
Take the Leafs for example. Arguably the most popular team in Canada, with fans from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Now according to your definition, just because they were not born nor live in the Toronto area, they are bandwagon fans... which I don't feel to be the case at all. I'm sure they're not fans solely for the reason that the Leafs have won the 2nd most Cups ever.

I could give more examples, but I think my point is clear.

Personally, the kind of fans I loathe (and I'm sure you'll agree) are the fans who after their team is out of contention or gets eliminated, they start becoming a fan of another team still in contention. The way I see it, you can choose a team you'd like to see win, but to start wearing the team's colours or shirts, etc., and acting as if you've been a fan all along is sickening. That is the type of bandwagon fan I despise.
There are certainly exceptions to the rule and I think we all have our own individual definitions of what a bandwagon fan is. Using your Vancouver Yankees fan example, I'd ask why did the guy choose the Yankees and not any other team? Why not the Dodgers or Reds or Red Sox, etc etc etc? Chances are it would have been because the team was winning when they decided to become a fan, hence, hopping on the bandwagon.

Hockey is a tougher example because for the vast majority of the NHL's history, there were only 6 teams to choose from and the vast majority of people in Canada were exposed to the Leafs via HNIC moreso than any other team. So it would be logical to me that there would be Leaf fans scattered all over the country, especially when you take into consideration the number of transplanted Ontarioans in other regions.

And yes, I do loathe the bandwagon fans as per your definition. I've got a friend who was a "huge" Cowboys fan in the mid 90s and by the late 90s suddenly he was a "huge" Broncos fan. He claimed that he was always a bigger Bronocs fan, but he was quiet about it because of their piss-poor Super Bowl record. Whatever.
ummm.....

GO EAGLES!!!!!!
so now that you know what a bandwagon fan truly is, please eat shit and die :thumb:!
I'm not entirely positive how the Tool Points are being scored, but I have a hunch. Does this take him to 27?
cferneyh Wrote:There are certainly exceptions to the rule and I think we all have our own individual definitions of what a bandwagon fan is.
Well my point is that your 'rule'/definition is totally false.

It is foolish to be labelled a bandwagon fan just because you support a team of a city you weren't born or reside in. According to you, ALL hockey fans who weren't born or ever lived in a city that has/had an NHL team are considered bandwagon fans. Do you realize how many fans that is? This would also include 99.99999% of all European NHL fans. A totally ridiculous thing to say.

Take hipbaser tragicallymike as another example. He's always been a Bosox fan, however he wasn't born nor ever lived in Boston. According to you, he's a bandwagon fan. I beg to differ!

Finally, what about all the family & friends of players? Parents who cheer for the team their son/daughter plays on are bandwagon fans even if such team is last in the standings? :what

I could go on and on poking holes in your definition...
tommygunn Wrote:It is foolish to be labelled a bandwagon fan just because you support a team of a city you weren't born or reside in.

Really? If you are from City X (with no pro sports team) and you decide to cheer for the consummate winner, the team with the most championships, etc etc etc, what would you call it? It certainly isn't rooting for underdog.

tommygunn Wrote:According to you, ALL hockey fans who weren't born or ever lived in a city that has/had an NHL team are considered bandwagon fans.

You are missing my point. An NHL fan born in Saskatoon who cheers for the Habs because they've won the most Stanley Cups, or the Lightning because they won the Cup last year, or the Red Wings/Avs/Devils because they are perennial contenders is, in my mind, most certainly a bandwagon hopper. However, a fan born in Saskatoon who cheers for, let's say the Thrashers, because he loves the way Dany Heatley plays, is most certainly NOT a bandwagon hopper. You seem to be missing my point that in order for me to consider one a bandwagon hopper, it means they are conveniently cheering for the favourite, with no real reason other than the fact that they are the favourite.

tommygunn Wrote:Take hipbaser tragicallymike as another example. He's always been a Bosox fan, however he wasn't born nor ever lived in Boston. According to you, he's a bandwagon fan. I beg to differ!

He most certainly does not fall under my description. He cheers for the team that (up until this year) was the perennial whipping boy to the Evil Empire. That hardly constitutes bandwagon hopping. But if he just started cheering for them after they beat the Yankees this year (which he didn't), then he certainly would be a bandwagon hopper.

tommygunn Wrote:Finally, what about all the family & friends of players? Parents who cheer for the team their son/daughter plays on are bandwagon fans even if such team is last in the standings? :what

C'mon, that's an obvious exception. I mean even if my kid grew up to play in the NHL and he was drafted by the Habs, even I'd become a Habs fan. Well, maybe not. But I'd try. :thumb:

I hope I've made myself more clear.

How do you know the reason they are cheering for that team? They could be a fan of the team for any number of reasons. You assume they are a fan because that team has won the most championships. Conclusions based on assumptions lead to ignorance.

If you know for a fact they're a fan solely because that team is doing well then of course they are a bandwagon fan.
The point I'm making is that you have no idea if every non born/reside fan is a fan just because that team has won the most titles, so how can you draw a conclusion and say they're all bandwagon fans. I'm not sure why you'd want to label someone based strictly on a (false) assumption. :?

And regarding the Thrashers... say there are hundreds of Thrasher fans in Saskatoon, yet you only know of that one fan.
According to your definition.... once the Thrashers improve and possibly someday win a Cup or two, the majority of those fans in Saskatoon (who weren't born nor ever lived in Atlanta) now become bandwagon fans. They are afterall cheering for a winning team. You see my point? You cannot assume when or why a person becomes a fan of a certain team. To say that all Habs or Yankees fans that weren't born or ever lived in those respective cities are all bandwagon fans is totally illogical and quite frankly a ridiculous thing to say.

Exactly my point. You know Mike's history. But as for the other millions of non born/reside Boston fans, you have no clue whatsoever when they became fans or what their reason is. To blindly label them bandwagon fans is, again, ridiculous. Mike's case is NOT an exception, millions of fans fit his fan 'profile'.
Take yourself for example. Say the Leafs have just won their 4th Cup in a row. If I had no clue you have always been a Leaf fan, and saw you posting a lot of pro-Leaf stuff on here, should I blindly assume you've jumped on the Leaf bandwagon? No! Doesn't it make sense that since I had no clue about your history or why you chose to be a fan it would be pretty ignorant of me to just assume you're a fan simply because the Leafs are a current dynasty?

The point I'm trying to make (again) is that you cannot blindly call someone a bandwagon fan just because they cheer for a team from a city they weren't born or ever lived in.
Labelling people based on an assumption is not cool...

Sigh. This is my last post on the subject since you clearly are not understanding what I am saying. I'll boil it down for you:

(1) Someone who starts to cheer for a team SOLELY because they are winning, or solely because they are the favourites, or solely because they have won the most championships is a someone who is hopping on the bandwagon. BUT, if you are born in or have some sort of tie to the city where that successful team is based, then this doesn't include you. I would expect a person born in NYC to cheer for the Yankees. However, I wouldn't expect someone born in Cincinnati to cheer for the Yankees unless it was for the obvious bandwagon hopping reasons.

(2) A didn't "blindly" label DC a bandwagon hopper. I know enough about his character from other dicussions he's had on this board to form the opinion that chances are, he is a bandwagon hopper. A guy from Sudbury who happens to cheer for the NHL and MLB teams with the most championships? Yeah, must be a coincidence.

(3). You could assume I was a bandwagon hopper or not, why would I care? We don't know each other, we don't hang out, we could pass each other on the street and have no idea. The day I become concerned about what random people on the 'net assume about me is the day I start seeing a shrink.

Dude, you don't like my definition of a bandwagon hopper. Duly noted. Let's leave it at that.
First off, I must say it's hilarious how you just pick out certain parts of my post to reply to. I guess you agree with everything else I said. :thumb:

It's funny to see your position evolve through the posts.

But anyways, I do understand what you're saying. I'm just saying I don't agree and that it's ridiculous to assume non born/reside fans of a certain team cheer for that team solely because they are a contender.

Yes, you know his history. As I mentioned previously you do not know the reasons why or when millions of other fans cheer for a particular team. You make an assumption, i.e. show ignorance.
