Hey guys/gals
I recently came accross alittle article on chartattack.com regarding the the concert in Vancouver on Sept. 19th.
This article seemed to hit home for me. Especially with this latest Hip tour. I was just wondering what every one else felt about this article, and wether or not you agree with it.
Here's the link:

This is true. Even in The States. The crowd is loud. It's never really bothered me, though. We're probably all guilty a little bit.
for $80 a ticket, fuck him! that's the was it's always been, what an idiot!
"I just really can’t hack audience's inability to shut up. What's that Sloan line? "It's not the band I hate…"
Looks like someone missed the classes on objectivity at journalism school. Sing away, fellow Hip fans!!
I just read the article and I agree completely.
I've been a fan of the band sence the " Up to Here" record and
have meet the band on many different occasions.
The point being there not Gods, they don't walk on water, or even raise the dead.
To appreciate ones art and to be inspired is a good thing and can lead you
to exploring your own talents or dreams. Though to act like a fanatic,
to yell out Hip...Hip...Hip in someone ears all night long and to scream" the
Hip F@#ken Rule" is just plain immature and childish.
I guess Gord Downie said it best in Lionized a song about being worshiped
" cold wind blowing over your private parts....don't know the lack you got
and it makes a strong case for art."
Just a thought.
Best to all,
Paul
Bah, I like singing along when I see a band. There's a difference between that and being obnoxious. The look on Gord's face last week at the first Winnipeg show was priceless during "Grace, Too" when everyone was singing along, it was a huuuge smile!
I also enjoy singing along with Gord. Its part of the fun of going to see a live show. And I think Gord enjoys it when the crowd sings along. On night 2 in Cleveland there was a lady singing along with Gord and when she got Gord's autograph later that night he thanked her for singing every lyric.
BTW....Our Lady Peace is notorious for letting the crowd sing "4 am" all by them selves with no help from Raine.
Of course we should sing! Have you ever been at a show when the crowd is belting it out, and Gord lays down a little delay to see if we're on our toes, and everyone stops singing to cheer. It's almost as good as when he starts dancing, and fighting with the mic! What kind of dumbass would get a job writing that tripe?
Ok, I can see everyones side to this and let me just say that the person that wrote the article obviously isn't a hip fan. I go to the shows and enjoy every moment. I don't stand there and complain the whole time. Or write articles whining about it. Its not often that I get to see them so I want to make the most of it. I respect everyones space but I m not going to stop singing or dancing just because someone has a stick in there ass. I came to see one of the best live bands and not to listen to their album. Go home if you can't handle a crowd. If someone is standing in your way or being obnoxious MOVE! Don't make a scene just move. I'm from Vermont and have fell witness to lots of immature obnoxious Canadians that come down and think they own the hip. So theres my little pet peave for the live shows. I love Canada don't get me wrong. Canadian music? Rush and The Hip are my favorite bands. I have nothing against Canada but there is always going annoying drunk people. A footnote to this book report..... I am in a band and there is a difference when the fans are getting into the music. Our best shows personally are when our fans are singing along. I can't begin to explain how much energy that creates for us. I can sum it all up in this last sentance. We get them off and they get us off. Its a give and take relationship. So deal.
Just the other day at the Orlando show is a good case in point, like my review said. There was a point where Gord laughed out loud and couldn't even complete the 'I can't hear you' line. The crowd was so loud, but he was in such a good mood, it was apparent he didn't mind.
Later in the show, at another point in time, the mic stand fell down, and Gord laid on the floor for a chorus or two, and the fans took over and belted out the tunes. When he stood up, he was all smiles.
If I was in a band, I'd rather see the crowd singing along and being happy and enjoying themselves...rather than see a bunch of deadbeats staring up at me.
Kari
I agree with Kari!
I was also at the Orlando show a few nights ago and the whole scene was great. I was there with 100's of other transplanted Canadians and it was so great just to come together and have the Hip as the common denominator for all of us...and this includes the singing of every lyric!
The Hip are not Gods....we all understand that. They are, however, the source of some of the greatest music ever played, the greatest live act I've ever seen and they are proud of their roots (no pun intended with the Canadian clothing line in mind!). With all that in mind, the Hip are widely accepted as having some of the most loyal fans in the industry and I'm proud to be one of them that sings along whether I'm listening at home, in my car, at the office or live with the Hip!
The fact that we can sing along with Gord is a compliment and I believe they see it that way as well. Are obnoxious fans bound to pop up at some shows? Sure....but they should be identified and removed so the rest of us can get lost in the Hip and leave every live show with that feeling of pride and pure pleasure that we all had in Orlando a few nights ago.
The guy who wrote this article seems to have been looking for something to complain about when he attended the show. That's too bad...he should have given his ticket to a true Hip fan who would have dove into the show head first and sang along with everyone else while Gord and boys look out and relish in the following they have earned with 16+ years of great music!
yes, there are idiots aplenty among our ranks, just like everywhere else. there are also a lot of canadians who know great music when they hear it, and are just exhilarated to think that this band is canadian, our band. Gord's lyrics are the sort that have also attracted a ton of thinking men and women to our ranks. (wow... i feel like part of a cult saying this). why should they or anyone else feel guilty for cheering?
i say sing until yer face is hoarse. in somerville this summer gord lost himself in 'pigeon' and consulted the crowd for the next line. he often struggles to come up with what's next... we can help keep him straight. singing along keeps us fourteen forever, right? and maybe that's what johnny column's upset about. well, i guess we can leave it to him to be sophisticated.
I can't understand why someone would want to go to a live concert and not sing along!! The person that wrote that article is a tool. The best part of a live concert is to lose yourself in the music. Everytime I go to a hip show I sing! I do that because I love the hip's music and I want to show the hip I love their music. As for Canadians thinking they own the hip. The person that stated that is a tool too. I'm american and I live near Canada and I love when the Canadians come to the hip shows. They are passionate for there music. Most of the time when I go to hip shows the Canadian people are the most open minded people there. I have made alot of Canadian friends at hip shows. Peace!
I'll sing till i'm blue in the face . It's just awesome to connect with a band like that . You don't like singing ? Then go see Britney Spears.
Here's a snippet from a Hip review I found on the net . (by Joe Wilbur) I think it's a good continuation of what Wheatking 20 was saying.
"The crowd gives back all the energy it can -— breathlessly
singing along, jumping about, dancing, screaming as beer
spills on the ground all around and the thick, slightly sweet
scent of pot erupts up from the crowd as it exhales
collectively, making for one long, collective, pulsating, jerking,
squealing, screaming rock orgasm."
