I have been looking to buy a couple Neil Young Albums for a while. Anyone have any recommendations as to the essential albums?

So many, but you gotta have "Everybody knows this is nowhere". Others to get woud be "After the Gold Rush", "Harvest", "Decade", "Mirror Ball" and his latest "Greendale" is awsome. Can't go too far wrong with Meil though. Have fun.

I have been into Neil for 10 years and these are the albums I would start with:
classic rock: Rust Never Sleeps
folkie/country: Comes a Time (Harvest is more famous but overrated)
loud rock: ragged glory/mirrorball
really mellow: Silver and Gold
Decade is a double cd of songs from 67-77 I think. I would recommend DECADE. Live Rust is great too, as most of his cd's. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Comes a Time, Freedom, Silver and Gold, Zuma, On the Beach, Greendale. Mirrorball is classic too.

Neil Young is one of the greats! Right up there with Dylan and Lightfoot...
Neil is a great! To be doing it for so long and still be making great music is phenomenal.
L. Pines, Neil is one of those artists that I've heard playing in my house since I was born. Whenever I hear him it reminds me of home and being a kid. My favorite albumn is without a doubt After the Goldrush, The Decade album is also a great one to start with. Hope you enjoy :thumb:
You can't forget "Harvest Moon". (Released on the exact same day as Fully Completely, I know because I was there as they were cutting the boxes open waiting to buy both!) It was the 20th anniversary for "Harvest" and Neil put the same musicians together for this album. Not only do I think this is my favourite neil albums, but one of my favourites of all time period. I doubt a month goes by where I haven't slid that one into my CD player. Every song is incredibe, but thats just one guys opinion...............lol
You can't forget "Harvest Moon". ~ Agreed, thats right up there with my favorite songs of all time. But, I actually put the disk in while in my car yesterday and realized when my brother borrowed it he put a big scratch on it. Oh well, at least I have a little brother that enjoys it.
"Because I'm still in love you...." indeed. Great stuff by a living legend. Neil excels at grunge, rock, and folk. "Like A Hurricane" is just pure bliss!
One of the best acoustic albums of all time is definately Neil Young Unplugged. It is a beautiful record, performed, I would argue, in his prime. As far as acoustic records, second only to Clapton unplugged(that is just pure genious)
be careful ... neil's done some odd albums in his time ... the ones others have mentioned are good ... but the 80s albums like "trans", "neil and the shocking pinks", "life" etc ... are probably for the real fans only
"tonight's the night" and "sleeps with angels" are essential ... and "weld" is the ultimate live crazy horse experience
I must beg to differ on two points...respectfully, of course, since we're both fans of a great artist:
- Life shouldn't be lumped in with the "80s albums". By the end of the 80s, he was making awesome rock'n'roll, not the bizarre stuff that got him sued for making music "unrepresentative of self". 1987's This Note's For You, a great rock album with a heavy horn section, is fantastic, and the live performances featuring the Bluenotes horns on Neil classics are some of the best and most interesting ever. Life, which followed shortly thereafter in 88-89, is just flat out loud rock with a little synthesizer thrown in. I would say Trans, Everybody's Rockin', and Landing on Water are the unholy trinity to stay away from.
- I also never liked Sleeps With Angels...I find it too long and boring. Each song meanders around with nothing much to do. I highly recommend Broken Arrow and Mirrorball, two loud rock albums of the same vintage with a lot less purposeless rambling, both in the lyrics and guitar solos. Of course I know a lot of people do like SWA, I just don't know why.
Also, I forgot to mention On The Beach. This is a mind-blowingly sad album, I hold right up there with Tonight's the Night, amybe even a little above it, but everybody forgets about. On The Beach connotes happiness and rolling surf, but it's more like being on the beach on a freezing cold night on an acid trip seeing sharks in the sand. Ambulance Blues is perhaps the single most stunning song he has EVER recorded.
