No.
I like IVL! I guess I'm in the minority. I also like M@W.
you are not alone comic book guy
anywho
i listened to IBE this morning, and it was great as always, i've liked it about the same since the first time i heard, hasn't grown on me, and i haven't become any less keen on it, it's a great album.
I like M@W too...greatly underrated in my opinion because it's so staggered. There's not a lot of consistency, but the quality songs are there! IVL is the only Hip album I don't like wholesale.
I wasn't going to post to criticize Summit because he's not are arsehole and I sometimes skip over his posts rather than be irritated by the liberties taken with our fair language...I'm not going to suggest he change because I know he won't, but I will say sometime I think it obscures his points. People pay more attention to the medium than the message...

i really like IVL as well...m@w it all depends on the mood i''m in..i've listened to it, thinking to myself, "god this is terrible", and other times i've thought it's brilliant..
I couldn't agree more. When I first bought IBE, I liked VS and just adored You're Everywhere. For some reason, I always have an easier time getting into the slower songs, so I liked NOIB and Are We Family right off the bat. Gus was cool too (reminded me of Tiger the Lion for some reason).
However, I didn't understand the hype around Josephine or Makeshift. Now, I would definitely rate Josephine as one of my favourite Hip songs. The last bit of Makeshift (after "let's shake some snow off of the roof") is by far my favourite part of the album, but for some reason the beginning of Makeshift doesn't impress me as much.
As for Nashville, SIKU, Heave, etc., they've grown on me like all Hip songs do. I still think PP and DFN are my top two Hip albums and I still have a huge obsession for UTH, but after those 3, I'd probaby put IBE above the rest.
Ohh... and BTW, I love IVL. I didn't know so many people were against it (I thought it was common knowledge that the majority of people here thought TATH was the weakest album... sounds like we might need another poll!).
Actually...you might be right. Until that one thread came up I had no idea so many people disliked half the songs on TATH (though virtually everybody likes SOME of it). When M@W came out, I remember everybody disliked it by and large, and I was always alone in a threadful of people bashing it. However, since IVL came out, I have heard wya more anti-Violet opinions and people seem to have greatly softened on M@W. Not most people's favourites, but I think (and this is complete speculation based on what I've seen talked about) people now realize M@W wasn't THAT bad considering how IVL turned out.
I loooove New Orleans Is Beat. I think it's a great song. It's beautiful. I didn't know anybody resented it! I agree totally with you, akoso. Heaven I don't like, but that's 1 out of 13 so I rank it as the best album since PP!
am i the only person here who loves every single hip and gordon downie song to pieces? honestly, all of them are unique and i love them all for different reasons, and i will continue to do so forever and ever and ever...and then some! sure there's some i like more than others, but really they're all fantastic songs, even the s/t EP lol. honest!
I agree with Grooveless Touque's Dylan/Neil Young analogy. No one nails it every time. Even the best careers have substandard moments (The Beatles, maybe, being the exception---but they only stuck around for 10 years).
I think the all-time worst Hip CD, songwriting-wise, is Music@work. Those songs simply lack focus: the lyrics are too wordy and abstract, the production too layered and egregiously 'studio', and, worst of all, the patented Hip hooks are nowhere in sight. M@W reeks to me of a record arduously cobbled together in a studio in the absence of any real inspiration.
IVL is an improvement on the level of songs. Those tunes still have some fuzzy, over-written lyrics, but on the whole they are effective as SONGS. You know, you could play them with just an acoustic and most of them would sound credible. The problem there is production, which blunts the band's edges and creates a tiresome 'professional sheen' over everything, like globs of ketchup over a good meal. I was cautiously optimistic that the Hip were on the mend with IVL, based on the songwriting, but they needed to get a better producer---and did. :thumb: And also Downie's Hip-related songwriting seems to have snapped back into focus, in splendid fashion.

Me too, but he's still a cool guy!
When the info about IBE started to come out and I wasn't sure I was going to like it. When I heard some of the new songs I didn't like them. Then like many here they keep getting better and better.
I recently made a compilation disc and it had two IBE songs and stuff from almost every album and it was amazing how much stronger the IBE stuff and how it stood out from everything else.

Nope. I'm one of those people too. Granted, there are a few Hip songs that don't really do it for me (Coconut Cream, Puttin' Down, Freak Turbulence), but most of their stuff I absolutely adore. I even like the much criticized In Violet Light. I think it's a brilliant album from start to finish. If I was to rank all the Hip albums, IVL would sit comfortably in the 4th position, right behind DFN, IBE, and PP. Good Life, The Dire Wolf and The Dark Canuck are three of the finest gems this band has ever written.
What I find really great about this band is that even a mediocre Hip song is still better than 90% of the shite you hear on the radio or Muchmusic. These guys are great songwriters and I think they've been remarkably consistent from album to album. That's a rare thing these days.
lol Cream Puttin and Turbulence are some of my favourites

here here, I love those tunes! :thumb:
HATE Cream, but Turbulence is an awesome song. M@W was worth buying just for Turbulence, Completists and Sharks!
