Hey.

I've got some family on the other side of the world, and the most they know of the Hip is that they're Canadian. They've never heard any of their stuff.

I'm going to be visiting them soon, and would like to burn them a Tragically Hip starter kit. I can spare 2 cds for it, and it'd be cool to have songs from all the albums on it, including some unused songs, too.

Any suggestions?
the entire live album always reels them in!
must include fiddler's green...that works
I did that for my sister, picked two songs off most albums, three off my favorites and gave it to her as a sampler....great CD
Go with every single one of the radio-songs...
The ones that were considered "hits"

Okay, a skeleton for your project...
You can probably fit more onto the CDs..

------------

Disc 1 - The "Popular" Songs

01. New Orleans Is Sinking
02. Little Bones
03. Ahead By A Century
04. Silver Jet
05. Poets
06. Grace, Too
07. My Music At Work
08. Highway Girl
09. Vaccination Scar
10. At The Hundredth Meridian

Disc 2 - Pick the "Hidden Gem" songs from the albums that are supercool but non-fans might never have heard of...

------------

Either this or just give them a copy of Fully Completely... Big Grin
The great thing about the Hip is you can rope people in depending on almost any musical preference they might have.

Loud rock? In Between Evolution will do nicely.
Grungy, dark rock? Day For Night
Fever-pitch Southern blues? Road Apples
American radio rock? Fully Completely
Folk rock? Up To Here
"Mature" rock? Phantom Power
Artsy pop-rock? Trouble...

Complete and total garbage? IVL

Give em a copy of Road Apples to start and they should be fine....oh yeah, make sure its REALLY LOUD!
I think we've discovered through the various polls and questions regarding favourite songs...the tastes truly are ridiculously varied...one persons life-long favourite is another's "I'll pass" So it is hard to pass our own favourites off on a new listener.

I think going with 2-3 songs off of each album plus a few "wild cards" is the best bet.

But rest assured, unless they are borderline deaf, whatever you give them will be enough to rope em' in for life.

GOULET!!!
Two things that ALWAYS work for me getting people into the band is the KillerWhaleTank and Double Suicide monologues.. .because I mean... who doesn't love those? I got three people into the band with those intros Smile
True, dat be...one time I made a mix CD for a friend in Virginia and the very first words on the whole cd were "This next one's called BLOW ME!" and less than five seconds in, she was grinning from ear to ear and fully completely READY to experience the Hip...gotta have some rants in there!
Explain that each song is an unfolding tale... and then let them experience the band on their own terms.

I find "here: listen to this!" never works as well as: "Lemme know what ya think."

If they're willing to give the stuff multiple listens, you're job is done, if they're not, it might be a lost cause.

At least that's been my experience with trying to convert folks. Hard sell never works... but once they say: "Why does he sing about Sept 17?" on their own accord... signed. sealed. delivered.

wow.you feel that strongly about it? i think it's a great album
Think Greatest Hits. That's the only way to do it.

IVL is NOT great, but I wouldn't describe it as garbage...the problem there is production, as was hashed out at some length in the 'Hip and producers' thread. :thumb:
Ya I'd throw in some IVL defiantly, cuase the averge listener is not that astute to tell the difference between great & shitty production. I actually jus made a 3 cd for this 1 girl that workz in the hospital, 1st i asked her if she'z heard of them, yes she has, 2nd, i asked to name 10 of their songz-no way(i thought I'd start her off tough) so I cut it in half-she named NOIS & 38, so I told her here'z the deal, I'll concoct a couple of cd'z to get you acquainted with the best band to come outta Canada. It was actally kinda hard becuase I thought well should I do tha Hitz or put what I groove too? I left out the E.P. and had to decide if I'd do the 3rd live or IVL & IBE, and if I can remember correctly it went a little something like this;
Cd 1:
-blow
- 38
- another midnight
- bonez
- LTR
- Bring it all back
- fiddlerz

- pigeon
- we'll go too

so in the end alot of people would say what tha, you left that off? but you gotta go with your gut and what I knew would break the heartz of everyone, so I left that thought abandoned......she was actually driving down the dempster to go on vacation and thought and hoped she'd take the diskz with her, I went and found them in the Lab thatz why I can so accuratly recall the set Cry oh well. woulda made some nice travelin music.... :?
