If you had to choose a particular series of albums that you find more entertaining, and in general, better, would you pick their Ep to Day for Night, or Trouble at the Henhouse to In Violet Light. It's a tough choice. As a musician, their later material shows more definiton of a group of talent and determination( no will), but being a fan of the early 90's era (ie: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Silverchair, Nirvana) their early material appeals to me more. Don't get me wrong, all their material is extremely energetic, undeniably awesome, and defines them as the 'Greatest band ever', but if you had to choose, what would you pick, or if it's to tough, what's your favourite album? Just a question from a newbie who has been entranced by the hip for 5 years, but only recently found this dedicated website to be addictive (more then beer, pot, or cigarettes).

' We were high, we were Sherpa High'
Well that is a tough one. I would have to choose tath to ivl. Although I have been a fan for a long time since the ep, I like the way the band has grown musically in the later years. My fav all time Hip song is Escape is at hand.......
I would have to go with TATH to IVL. I really enjoy how the music has changed and evolved over this series of albums.
The first view where alittle of the same.
It's interesting how people like the "new stuff" more, yet yearn to hear the "old stuff" in concert.

Anyway, I'd go for the "old stuff", thru Day for Night. It rocks more, even though all albums have a similar sound, I never get bored of it.

Having said that, I think Phantom Power is a phenomenal record -- probably my favorite (sans The Rules). But I think it is closer to The Hip's old work than TATH, M@W, IVL.
IVL is my favourite album since Day For Night. I like old and new Hip in different ways. The way they've evolved reminds me alot of Pearl Jam. I love the way both bands have evolved.
It's impossible for me to say which "era" I like better, as I've found myself growing along with the band. When I first turned on to the Hip in '89, I was a 20 year old university student and as such, was in to "bar music" (ie. the louder and more rockin' the better). Now, however, my musical tastes have evolved into something more demanding - and the more recent CDs have more than answered that need.

That said, I still reach for Road Apples when the mood hits... 8)

Just the other night, MuchMoreMusic had a "Story of..." special on Rush in which Geddy Lee tried to explain the dedication of their fans by saying that for many, the band's music has become the "soundtrack of their lives"...

For me, the Hip fit that description...

For me the Hip albums actually are divided into three eras. EP -> Road Apples, Fully Completely -> Henhouse and Phantom Power -> In Violet Light. It's hard to pick a favorite, but since Phantom Power is my all time favorite album and In Violet Light and Music @ Work have so much feeling in them I would pick the new stuff.
I guess given the eras from the original post I'd have to pick the latter era, but it's pretty close.
I definatley enjoy the early era, much more charisma, and rawk. I respect what their doing now, however for me perosnally it the early stuff that I enjoy most.

To me what I like about the Hip the most, is their "aura" all their following on the internet, being able to download boots (THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HOSTS THE SHOWS!!) And I think if I was there for ARA 1993 etc. I wouldn't like them so much. I like, that I missed most of the "rawk" era, because I'll be forever catching up, trying to capture what I missed, which is an unaccomplishable task. When I hear Lansdowne Park 1993, I go "WOW" It would've been nice to be there. It's like "The book" is always better than "The movie" type of philosophy. Another thing too, I love the fact that their from Kingston. I've never met them, but I "feel" like, hey their regular guys, just like me.

Disclaimer: I realize that I may be naive ("only when I'm drinkin' of course") however it's My honest opinion/thoughts.

Hmmm, this is a tough one. I would have to say I prefer the early years by a hair(-bird), only because IMHO Day For Night is their best album ever. Maybe not the best individual songs, but the best album. That said, this is like picking your favourite child, as both eras are great.
I do like the old stuff in its own way, but the more I listen to IVL , the more I love it. The songs sound crisp the lyrics, well its Gord Smile Anyway I think it all depends on the person, the individual...thats what music is. Its a choice on what we like and enjoy. I'll take Hip over anything Smile
I'd have to say i like their early work best, though i also think that Phantom and IVL are great. But Up to here still is my favourite, and Road apples and Fully are unbelievable as well. May'be that's because i've heard them more often, i don't know...

Having said that, i feel bad for not mentioning Day for night.....ah well....Smile
