I just ran into an amazing deal for a new computer.
But I have a question about USB 2.0
Everything I have ever used is not 2.0, but the new one is.
Can I still use all my old equipment - cords, camera, scanner, printer, etc...
I believe I can, but I just want to be sure.
USB 2.0 is just a faster version of the previous USB. USB 1.1 allowed a max transfer rate of 12 Mbits/sec, while USB 2.0 has a max of 480 Mbits/sec (yup, big difference).
To answer your last question, yes all of your old USB stuff should work with your USB 2.0, as USB 2.0 is backward-compatible. In addition to this, the really cool thing is USB 1.1 is (in theory) also forward-compatible, meaning that you should be able to buy devices that require USB 2.0 and use them in USB 1.1. If you want more info on how this works, just ask (I don't wanna bore you if you don't care anyway
).
BTW, just remember that even though USB 2.0 can transfer at 480 Mbits/sec, your old USB 1.1 devices were only made to use the 12 Mbits/sec and as a result won't take advantage of the increased abilities of USB 2.0.

Pretty good. The only thing I find with these packaged deals (especially a la Dell) is if you wanna upgrade anything at all, all of a sudden you lose your great deal (they charge too much for upgrades).
So with this computer, for example, I'd definitely upgrade the video card to have 128 MBs and I'm not a fan of Celeron chips (a 2.6 GHz Celeron will run much slower than a 2.6 GHz PIII, PIV or Athlon). But still, for only $400, it's definitely a good deal.
Yeah I was worried about the Celeron, that is honestly why I was hedging. Never heard good things.
I talked to two computer guys about this, and they said in the past year, celeron is pretty much on par with athlon.
Nothing is wrond with my computer, but it is four years old and I am running ME still.
Pretty much I am getting this for the DVD burner, XP, 80gb.
And the $400.00.
I would like to take all my Hip videos and transfer then to DVD.
That will be my next question.

I think the Athlon compares much closer to the Pentium series. AMD also has a budget processor called the Duron which is meant to compete with Intel's Celeron. Those two are more on par.
Like I said before, the computer you'll be getting is probably worth the $400 that it'll cost you to upgrade from your old computer. I was worrisome about XP when I first got it (coming from ME), but now I can't believe the crap I put up with when I had ME.
Also (I honestly have no intention of hijacking this into a MAC vs. PC war, but I would stick to your PC. I’m not going to get into which computer is better or anything. My only reason for getting a PC is the vast majority of the world uses a PC, so you may as well keep familiarizing yourself and improving your PC skills as they will be more marketable and more versatile.
They still make Mac's?

Sarcasm aside, Apple is still making great computers; but you'll never find one at that price point.
My advice to anyone buying a computer is always, "Get A Mac!" And I'll leave it at that... for now. :twisted:
