I was going through my liner notes on DFN yesterday and I came across 2 interesting things. The first, is that Jake Gold of Canadian Idol (word used loosely) "fame" is or at least was a major player in the Hip's management team. He caught a winner with the Hip, time will tell if he can work his magic with Ryan Malcolm...I think NO!!!
But the 2nd thing I noticed, and quite possibly the most interesting, is the Hip's mentioning of Bruce Dickinson (yes, the Bruce Dickinson) in the liner notes. I can't help but flash back to that Will Ferrell skit on SNL and think about Bruce Dickinson being in the studio and busting in and telling Gord "Yeah Gordie that was great, but I really need you to explore the studio space a little more, oh and I gotta have more Susan!!! I've gotta fever and the only prescription is more Susan. When I'm done with you boys you'll all be wearing gold plated diapers"
If you haven't seen the skit, go rent the best of Will Ferrell's SNL DVD...truly a classic.

Wow! I totally don't remember seeing that episode. That's classic! Was it the episode when the Hip played Nautical live? Was Gordie actually in the skit?
I'm definitely gonna have to rent/buy that DVD. BTW, does any one have their set from SNL available for download?
i believe it's on the ftp site

It is the same Jake Gold - and I think he still manages Gord, although the band dropped him a couple years ago. Speaking of Jake Gold... I went to Canadian Idol last night, and that's all I have to say about that. :oops:
As far as that skit is concerned, Bruce Dickinson, (as played by Christopher Walken) busts in on Blue Oyster Cult and says he needs more cowbell - no Hip at all. I think that mr. goulet was making a joke.
Here's the video clip: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://mknx.com/v/cowbell.wmv">http://mknx.com/v/cowbell.wmv</a><!-- m -->
But how can you be sure that it is the same Bruce Dickinson in the liner notes as in Iron Maiden?
Okay... not to piss everyone off but I have no clue who Bruce Dickinson is. Anybody able to give the scoop before I hit Google? I just finished transcribing the lyrics to LBU the best I could and at the beginning of The Luxury Gord sounds like he says "Bruce."
On a side note about names in liner notes, anybody ever notice Farley Mowat? -- writer of People Of The Deer, among others, one of my fave writers of all time. Anybody know why he was mentioned?

Former lead singer of Iron Maiden.

Here are a number of reasons from googlism.com: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.googlism.com/index.htm?ism=farley+mowat&type=1">http://www.googlism.com/index.htm?ism=f ... wat&type=1</a><!-- m -->
He was born in Belleville, and I think that he lives in the Kingston area now.
Iron Maiden, check. But what the hell is that Googlism thing? I've never seen it before. As for Mowat, I was wondering if maybe one of the Hip read him. I suppose they all have read a book or two by him, as with hopefully everybody on the hipbase here, but I meant does anybody know why they put him in the liner notes?

Damn! Now I'm embarrassed and disappointed!

It's a website (not endorsed by Google) that uses the Google search engine to search for a word. It then looks in the results and pulls out sentences that it thinks describes the word you're searching for. Sometimes it can be quite off though. I used it the other day 'n searched for Doug Gilmour... check out the first result:

From
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.co...ally%20Hip, I found this:
Code:
[The Tragically Hip] were signed by MCA in 1987 when Bruce Dickinson saw them perform live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario.
It then has this info linked from the name "Bruce Dickinson":
Code:
Bruce Dickinson (born Paul Bruce Dickinson) August 7 1958 in Worksop Notts, England) the singer in the heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
Although this seems to be a connection, I think this website just made a mistake linking Bruce Dickinson from IM to the Bruce Dickinson that was the president of MCA. I don't recall the IM Bruce ever being president of MCA and would find it hard to believe, since he continued to make records with IM into the early 90s... and none of IM's records were ever recorded with MCA.
So, either the reference in the liner notes is to Bruce, the guy who discovered the Hip and signed them to MCA, or it is in reference to Bruce, the lead singer of IM. I'd go with the former.
BTW, as a quick tidbit, Bruce Dickinson was the lead singer of Iron Maiden during their most popular times, but IM recorded three albums before his arrival. In fact, their second and third albums (Iron Maiden and Killers) were quite successful.
Bruce Dickinson discovered the hip.
Quote:Together [The Hip] played the local clubs and toured across Canada catching the attention of MCA Records President Bruce Dickinson after seeing their performance at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern.

Sorry for the confusion...yes it was meant as a joke...I'll have to work on the "make it obvious" thing.
But like I said, do yourself a favour and watch the skit, it's quite possibly one of the funniest things I've ever seen on SNL...next to Robert Goulet of course!!!
Then picture Bruce Dickinson, busting in on the Hip during the recording of DFN, and hopefully you will enjoy it on as many levels as I seem to be.
GOULET!!!

Just watched the clip via Chris' link... definitely fits the classic, much funnier, older SNL. And I totally picture the Hip rendition you suggested...
