I wanna get into Pearl Jam, and I want some advice. I dont know where to begin with their catalogue. My question is, what would be the first choice of album for getting into them. For example, I would tell just about anyone getting into The Hip to pick up Road Apples, no question.

Ten and Live at The Garden
ten and the live at the garden dvd or the buffalo show from the last tour
3 disks they rocked way past the 11pm curfew

I'd go chronologically, that's usually the best way to get into a band. No Code will be the toughest to get into but will be the most appreciated later on.
So I say go chronologically and maybe pick up some of the 2000 boots and the 2003 boots inbetween.

I would go with VS followed by No code. This is diffcult because their bootlegs from their previous two tours are amazing.
I'll say No Code, great great CD! Doez anyone who has any of those official bootlegged PJ gigz do B&P'z for them? I have none of those bootz but keep hearin great thingz about them....
I'd definitely go chronologically. Pearl Jam has changed quite a bit from their debut album, and much like the Hip, their newer stuff is more challenging and tougher to get into. They're no longer just a "grunge" band. Over the past decade, they've developed into more of a hard rockin' neo-folk band with punk ideals, if that makes any sense at all. I'd say their 5th album "Yield" is a pretty good bridge between the older stuff and the newer stuff.
Hmmm...Pearl jam eh! I would go to say HMV, or Music world and find their 2 for rack. Pearl jam is always there and pick them up cheaply as you find them. But definately buy a live recording of one of their shows...that is how i absolutely fell in love wth them. Favorite albums are no code, yield, and riot act! But i love em all :thumb:
PS, they are touring from the 1st to 8th of october in the 'swing states'. I smell a road trip!!!
I started to REALLY get into music when I was about 11 'n 12 and Ten is one of the first albums I fell in love with (and have loved it ever since). After Ten, I really got into Vs. and found Vitalogy to be okay. Since then, I've given their newer stuff a try and have liked parts of Yield and most of Binaural, but I always thought that the vast majority of people considered No Code to be PJ's worst album... although that theory seems to be off considering the suggestions given here. I do, however, feel safe making the assumption that PJ's later works take a higher level of appreciation and more time to truly enjoy, which I find most of the posters here seem to have. I'll definitely have to give No Code a couple more tries.

I would say telling someone to pick up "No Code" would be the equivalent of telling someone trying to get into the Hip to pick up "TATH" and give it a listen. I am one of those people who dismissed "No Code" at first. Then I popped it in and listened a while later and couldn't believe why I didn't like it. I GOT IT!
VS is always a good starting point I think for Pearl Jam, or Yeild. If 'Evolution' doesn't grab your attention and kick your ass, nothing will. That is such a tremendous song!
Alright, so just to quickly reiterate, I was a die-hard PJ 'n Nirvana fan in the early 90s. I consider Ten one of the best albums of all time and I like Vs. more than most non-die-hard PJ fans.
So after reading all this PJ stuff, I decided to bring Vitalogy into work with me, since I haven't listened to the whole album in years. Of course I've always loved Better Man, but I forgot just how much I adore Corduroy (when it came on, a couple people gave me the "there's no way this guy can be enjoying his work that much" as they snarled at my huge smile). Nothingman's a great song too 'n I remember liking some of the others like Not for You and Immortality.
So after my brief comments on the album, what do you guys think of Vitalogy (in relation to other PJ albums, as far as individual tracks go, any general comments).

Last exit and whipping are awsome tunes to hear live...im still waiting to hear not for u and satans bed at a show (maybe this fall!!)...but immortality is my fav off vitalogy. There is an awsome acoustic version of it on Benaroya.
forget about all that "milk the fans" for shitty $40 bootlegs crap. all are good but, vitalogy is the only album that has any relavent meaning. it was their first real album that didnt follow the heard of "grunge".
i cant listen to another mediocore band butcher a ramones song again. how many times have they put "i believe in miracles"on their bootlegs? 10, 20?
