Way to go! Man, that survey must have taken you a lot of time and resources. I hope you had some help!
I don't know what it is though. .
but with every listen I like it more. Which is amazing. . it being the hips what. . 10th album?
After listening to it. . and then fully completely. . .makes me appreciate IBE way more. . as far as the pure product overall. . it is the best. The one that comes closest to it I think is Day for Night. . . close between those two.
sorry, DFN is BY FAR their best album
Yeah, DFN is THE masterpiece...and I think the bulk of Hip fans (not all) would agree. It's like 'Empire Strikes Back'---most of us would agree that's the best of those movies, I'd hazard.
I re-listened to Road Apples a few days ago, and it's great, but IBE is so much richer, and edgier, in terms of musical depth, looseness and variety...it's one of those rare records by an established rock and roll act that manages to combine the urgency of their youth with real lyrical and musical sophistication.
It'll go down as one of the major statements of the Hip's career. Easily the best since PP, and probably in the top three. :thumb: Also easily the most 'alternative'-sounding record they've ever made.
I love IBE, but to say it's their best is extremely premature. Firstly, an album should only be ranked AFTER it's had it's live run. Secondly, it's unfair to compare eras because things like productions on albums and age of the group cannot be compared. Sounds of 1990 with 2004 are extremely different in general & the Hip have much more money anyways to make a great sounding album. Not to mention, I hate to compare a 25 year old Gordie with the Gordie of today. Can't be done because they're completely different.
By the way, Fully is my favorite album. Nothing gets me going like Meridian live, or hearing 50 MC or Wheat Kings live. Sure, I love Makeshift among others, but how will they sound live? Will I have goosebumps when I hear Are We Family? Hope so, but that's the thing: I don't know yet.
I find the best way to rank albums is to pick it up a year after it came out and see what it does for me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE IBL, but I think right now, people are happy it's a good album and because it's significantly better than their last two albums. I'll see how it stands up in time...
My vote is still with DFN
Don't get me wrong...I am in love with DFN, especially right at the moment...But i'm always a little surprised when so many people list it as their favourite hip record.
I can't really place any album as my favourite as they all have songs that I love to death. I voted for Fully Completely when there was a poll up a few months ago, but that was because it happened to be the album I was hooked on at the time. Right now, I actually can't get enough of Henhouse.
I listen to at least five different Hip albums a day. Some days it'll be IBE, DFN, FC, PP and CMG. The next day it'll be BOTN, PP, IVL, TATH and UTH. It just goes on and on. I don't even notice I listen to the Hip anymore. So if someone asked "what's in your CD player?" right now, I'd be like, "uh, Velvet Revolver." or "Beastie Boys" cuz I listen to the Hip so much I don't even realize that I've ripped thru all their albums in the last two days. It's nuts.
I think before we put IBE up at the top out of all Hip albums though, we're gonna have to wait til at least 3 or 4 albums in the future. Everybody is bent up on it cuz it's new. We're biased cuz we're fans.

I like how we do this every week, we should just have a permanent poll in the corner or something.
Trouble is the best album by a few thousand light years, and in keeping with the theme of this thread: If you don't think so, I will come to your basement apartment and bludgeon you with a Cod Fish until you agree.
It's Trouble people...
Ahh Cod Fish, you pull at my Newfie heart strings by saying those two words. However, I do agree at the moment. From the opening notes of Gift Shop to the bitter end of Put It Off, TATH is definitely one hell of an album.
Well Brazle, I am as unbiased as anybody and I really do think this is one of their best albums. You just know when you know! I could not stand IVL and I still can't. There's only three songs on the whole album I like listening to...I could never get into a lot of songs people seemed to love, like Are You Ready and Dire Wolf. After that I was extremely disheartened and then when I heard Ballroom and Joe and only liked one of them, I wasn't optimistic about this album. And then once I heard Heaven, I was SURE I wasn't going to like it, but it blew me away. 11 of these songs I absolutely love, and how often can you say that about anybody's album? Heaven is still the only track I skip. The fact that it came after an album I do not like at all (most people pick M@W for that honour but I like it a lot more than IVL) had me wary, and the sheer quality of the songcrafting, PLUS the absolutely brilliant production, really made me feel like the band is having a renaissance after just one bad (IMHO) album. I was surprised by how much I like this album, going into it not expecting to, and so I can genuinely say it bowled me over and give it credit and a place of high stature in the ranking of the Hip's best albums.
For me only Phantom Power is better as a complete album, though Fully is right up there!
Agreed. IVL never hit me either. I just meant the album's been out for about a month and people are putting it right up there at the top. I figured it was because it's a new album. We'll just have to see if IBE survives the test of time. 3 or 4 albums in the future that are ten-times better than FC or DFN would certainly change everybody's attitude towards IBE.

hock:
