Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
I agree, Evil Dead 2 is the perfect combination of both Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. It's got the cheezy gore of the first combined with the cheezy gore of the latter. An all around enjoyable film.
Also, not really a "sequel" per se, but the Lord of the Rings movies did nothing but improve as they progressed.

I've always despised sequels. To me they are not very creative.
As for The Empire Strikes Back, episode 5 of 6, not a sequel.
If you guys want to say some sequels are better than the originals, I won't disagree. With any form of art, it's all opinion. I just always felt it was weak to make a movie continuing after another movie's success. Just like the crappy "remake." A movie so good they try to release it again cuz they don't have any good writers in Hell, er, I mean Hollywood.
I'm a big moviehead. I could sit and watch any movie as long as I watch it from start to finish. Even them old ones where there's no sound but every so often the picture changes to dialogue. I've seen thousands of movies since I was a kid. My dad used to rent two movies a night since the day I was born. But sequels I despise. I'll watch them but they'll never make my A list. NEVER.

Nope. Neither. There is not a single sequel I have watched that I would pick over the original one. Not one. Those both are good movies but only if you watched the first one first. They are directly reliant upon the first one and cannot stand as their own.

What about Jurassic Park 2? I liked that more than the original!
how about any of the idiana jones movies that wasnt the first one(i cant remember which came first)

Brazle is right, you do have to watch those in sequence... so I guess he's got a point. The closest rivalry I could think of off the top of my head would be Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. The Last Crusade. Now I don't think that LC is better than ROTLA, but a very good sequel that is not reliant on the previous movies in the trilogy. Just my opinion though.

Last CRusade was the last one and there have been talks since 95 about a fourth.
But still, sequels kinda count on the fact that there was a first movie. There are sequels I love such as the Indiana Jones BUT they were only made due to the success of the first one and that is what I hate.

Austin Powers did horrible at the box office.
Austin Powers 2 in it's opening weekend made more money than part one did throughout it's entire theatrical release.

I don't know the stats on this but if the first Austin Powers didn't make enough money there is no way they would sink more money into a second. It's a bad investment.
And that's what a lot of sequels are based on; estimates.
