Any re-ocurring themes or references that folks can spot? I'll start with the one that first comes to mind:

A locked museum.

It's actually exactly what a leitmotif is: as the term is uniquely felxible as a literary device.

It's common usage refers to the re-appearance of a certain person, place or idea, one meant to link certain events in a song or play via allusion. It can also simply be a re-occuring theme. (And now that I think of it actually: they both fit in this case.)

Well as for the locked museum ... the concept is also made reference to in Work That Hard, which predates both of those songs! It's one of my favourite images; I'm happy that even if WTH didn't get released, the lines resurfaced further on down the road.

It's always perplexed me how Gord makes reference to "Superfarmer" TWICE on Phantom Power. It's a very strange idea, I have no idea to what it refers, and stranger still that he should use it twice on one record in different songs.

I always believed "Superfarmer" refered to Bio-Tech or chemically aided growing techniques which are great for producing mass quantities but may have yet unseen consequences down the road. Hence "The Moralists" wanting to get at him...

However, there is also a popular German co-op operation with the brand name "SuperFarmer" where the famers cut-out the middle man and grow, distribute and sell their goods all on their own.

i think the German co-op makes more sense, because i think Poets is about gettin' paid, and in saying so i must also say that even the riff sounds "money" (if that makes any sense): "when you find out how he gets paid", "when you find out it's the writers who get laid" "lawn cut by bare-breasted women" "make it by swimmin'"...perhaps swimming in a sea of money?

Could be, but I think the SuperFarmer in Poets is more of an ironic reference since he's seeking "reprieve" in the very spot that's putting him out of business.

One of my colleagues has the "It's the writers who get laid!" improv/lyric as his "Welcome" sound at his computer at the office. We still get a kick out of it...

sorry i meant a leitmotif in musical terms...thats a little melody that represents a certain theme or character, used predominantly by Wagner

Ooh! How do you do that? Didn't know you could alter the startup sound...I'd love to change it to ANYTHING else...I usually mute my speakers because I find that loud crescendo of sound annoying.

I agree with the opinion that Superfarmer refers to the genetic modifications of the corporations, because that works in conjunction with the line about being bent on the cover of Time. These organisations are so high and mighty, proclaiming they're saving humanity with their unnatural workings, so I figured that hypemongering and publicity seeking trait would fit them well.

Well, someone more computer literate than I can probably help, but I think all you do is go to Control Panel, go to Sounds and Devices and then browse your computer for the appropriate .wav or mp3.

Cool... I've set it up so that Gord's "EEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAT MEEEEEEEE!" from the cookie factory rant is now my opening sound. I wish I could reboot right now but I've got torrents downloading!
